Loud ticking after engine stopped + egr

Hi all.
Some point in the summer last year I found a loud ticking after taking the key out my 2010 fl2.
Took ages to find at first and not knowing a lot about engines I took it to someone who might.. He suggested that it was electronic from down near the EGR valve. Unplugged something (no idea what) and fitted a blanking plate to EGR.
Everything was good, car runs a little worse on fuel.. But has been running well.

Cut to mid winter and one morning the car just wouldn't start. New battery fitted and Alls good..

Cut to today (about 6 weeks after new battery) and all of sudden I get EML come on..plug in obd and its Telling me the EGR is stuck closed? Yet its not noticed this at all before.. In over 6 months? Does this mean I can't keep it blanked off?

There's also a load more codes greyed out underneath the "current fault". As per the photo.

Been watching a few vids on YT and I can't help wondering? Would it have been the throttle body doing the loud ticking for a minute after the ignition off and.. Has he unplugged that? Would the car still run with it unplugged?

Any help is appreciated.

So... I've taken the blank off the EGR and noticed sure enough it was a large plug that goes into the throttle body that has been left unplugged....
Its the throttlebody ticking away like mad when put key in ignition and take it out again.
Car runs but like a bag of spanners (presumably because the EGR pipes are now freeing up all the Censored ?)
Arrgh

Put the EGR blank back in check the throttle body plate moves freely. It's not uncommon for the gears to strip, leaving the throttle plate across the air stream, preventing the engine from running.

Is your Freelander a Td4 150 bhp or an Sd4 190 bhp?
The accepted wisdom is that the Sd4 cannot have the entire egr blanked off and the blanking plate needs to have a small hole in it, can't recall if 6mm or 8mm, in order for a certain amount of gas to by pass it in order to prevent it throwing up an EML.
I have one like this:

On my Sd4 with no issues whatsoever in quite a few years. Having said that I don't actually think there was any significant difference in performance before or after fitting it.
It was much more marked improvement on my Td5 Discovery when I took its egr out. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

When you shut the engine off, is it a smooth shut down, or rattly like it is trying to run on for a couple of seconds? Mine made that ticking noise on switch off, and car used to rattle until I swapped the throttle body, ever since it been superbly smooth and the engine just fades away on shutdown. Egr wise, I'm sure pre 2010 could be blanked off no issue, post 2010 blanking plate needed a 3mm hole in to prevent codes.

You can get a throttle body repair kit on ebay.

Ive just checked on ebay - Jeez the only one from within Uk is now £100
But you can get the same kit from Poland for £30 - go figure Rolling Eyes
Glad I bought my kit when I did in 2022 for that fateful day. Jules

So. I'm no mechanic but I bit the bullet and got a new throttlebody. Few Ytube vids and Just over an hours work.. hey presto.. Its on.

No more loud ticking! FANTASTIC!
(took the old one apart and surprise surprise... Bottom cog had hardly any teeth left). It had clearly been doing nothing for a while.

Still had check engine light for EGR so... Decided to remove the EGR plate and the car just won't start.. Put the plate back on and it runs but has EML again after a few miles... If my td4 egr can't be blocked then I wonder why it's taken 6 months for an EML to appear?
