TD4 Power Steering Pump

Has anyone replaced the power steering pump on a Td4 2.2. I need to replace mine and wondered if it was complex.

I have a 2009 Td4 2.2.

Sre you sure that it needs replacing and that it's not the usual blocked filter in the steering reservoir which can cause a whining noise? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I have given the reservoir and filter a good clean with break cleaner because they were in a terrible state when I took delivery of the car. I also replaced the fluid. I am more worried about the humming/rumbling noise room the pump area when the car is idling. There is an occasional stuttering from the steering when manoeuvring.

Of course the humming could be the alternator bearing which is underneath.

I replaced the reservoir, they cost almost nothing, less than £20 delivered. Mine had heavy steering and the fluid was black, but no noise. After replacing the reservoir and a litre of fluid, and the steering was transformed into how it should be.

If it is the PS pump, it's not difficult to replace, just a few bolts, 2 pipes and the belt.

Humming noise sounds more like alternator to me, how is the over run bearing on the alternator? They are known to fail, giving a variety of symptoms, from noise to vibration at various engine speeds.

PS pump bearings hardly ever fail, it's normal the vanes that wear, which make a distinctive whining sound, which changes pitch or volume when the steering is turned. 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. Soon to be sold.

Thank you. I suspect there may still be residue in the filter causing occasional stuttering of the steering and humming is the alternator.

It's virtually impossible to see the state of the actual filter in the reservoir unless you saw it in half (which I did and found it full of cr@p) so ordered one off ebay for £18.50 inc postage

@Dorset - How much CHF202 do you need to flush the PAS system?

Was going to get the Smith & Allan LLS product at about £10/L but 5L is the smallest quantity. Jules

Did a search - had completely forgotten I'd already found the answer. Rolling Eyes
JLR says 4L but others say they flushed with less than 2L. Jules

I've done it a couple of times it with 1 litre, just remember to keep enough of the new fluid back to fill the res after the flush.

Hi all, I had whine and heavy steering symptoms. Went ahead and changed reservoir using the method in the video above, using old reservoir to collect old fluid and new one to add fresh green fluid. I had wheels up and did 30 left to right turns to ensure any air is pushed out of the system. Steering stayed nice and light for a few minutes in first drive then went back to heavy. Suspected air was still left in the system so bled again with wheels up and monitoring for fluid bubbling. Lots of air still, it turns up.

Long story short, the fact that air enters the system quickly after being bled, makes me think o-rings are perished. I suspect it’s the quick disconnect return line from reservoir, but indeed it could be any of the quick disconnects, e.g, to radiator.

I was looking at the prices for new hose LR026229 and at nearly £100, wonder if i can change just the actual push fitting as per image in the post gallery. I tried searching and I only come up with similar design used in fuel systems. Anyone care to weigh in where to purchase just the fitting?

The whole PS pipes system is under pressure, except where the pump draws from the reservoir, so any leaks in the O rings will expel fluid, not introduce air.
Make sure the engine isn't running when turning the steering, as the rotation of vanes when running seems to trap air inside the pump body. 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. Soon to be sold.
