20mph limits in Wales

Be hardly worth travelling there again - as for JulesK, may as well chop in the Landy and get yourself a bike

We've got these 20mph restrictions here in North Brum in certain places. My road was reduced from 30 to 20. The result ? The traffic is actually faster than before. There are more cars now doing up to 40mph on a regular every day basis and some will now travel at motorway speeds ! How there's not been a fatality or even a major smash, I don't know. Just a matter of time.

there's a long stretch of road past a school near us that's 20mph, i think i'm the only one who does it even when the children come out, good job the council haven't got rid of the crossing lady.
YET Common sense isn't very common.

I can understand 20 mph limits on the smaller off route residential roads, but I think that more money needs to be spent on making the through routes safe for traffic to travel at 30 or 40 mph, with better pedestrian separation and protection.

A rethink of the traffic laws is perhaps required, to limit pedestrians crossing the road, except on (more frequent) light controlled crossing points on main routes.

Perhaps some of the 'cycle path' extra funds should be spent providing better routes for cars.

In the meantime, I shall continue to visit the lovely market towns of South Wales, using the fantastic network of fast (lightly used) dual carriageways they have on that side of the Severn. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Probably waiting for her to get run down, having to retire sick and never being replaced.

1,They need to be caught.
2, the penalty needs to be severe.
3, regular speeders banned for a minimum of 5 years with no excuse of "it's my livelihood"
4, regular results need to be in the press/TV.

We don't need drivers with this attitude to speed on our busy roads, DAVE.

I am sure however that we want good quality roads, and laws appropriate to those roads that are well researched and not part of the government's tax policy.

'Road Use' education and Rules that match most peoples common sense are the carrot, draconian punishments only work after the (tragic) event. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

BBC news reporting the case of a van driver who’d travelled 10 miles on the M4 in Wales, twice over the limit. Seems he was only spotted as his van had no nearside tyres and rims were wearing down. He told police he was drunk but blamed it on covid Rolling with laughter
Banned for 17 months (yes, only 17) and fined £300. Must have cost ten-times that to repair M4
Assume he was doing less than 20mph Wink

My road is a side road that's used as a rat run to bypass a very busy set of traffic lights. It's about 1/2 a mile long and fairly wide. Despite parked cars, 2 cars can easily pass each other, unless there's parked cars on both sides of the road opposite each other. This results in so many near scrapes as nobody will relent and give way. So many of the residents cars have been damaged with the culprits always carrying on and not stopping. A couple of weeks ago a taxi smashed down the side of an elderly residents car ( again, failing to yield as the obstructing car was on his side of the road) and drove off. Despite it being caught on CCTV and name of the taxi firm being emblazoned on the car in big letters, police refused to even come round as the number plate wasn't clear enough. "Take it up with he taxi firm, civil matter" was the reply. Taxi firm denied anything " We have 8 cars and all our cars are silver - could've been anyone. Sorry, can't help". Hmmm, maybe it's the driver who's not working today - because he needs a new wing, bumper , headlight and wing mirror !
I fear it's only a matter of time before there's a fatality. Then and ONLY then , will the police be interested . Too busy arresting people for "hate crimes" for having a difference of opinion to the current woke mob.

They come round pretty sharpish if the car is not taxed. A few years ago when we still had tax discs a local "kerbside motors" outfit use to get two same model write-offs to mackle-up into one car. They usually had one or two valid tax discs that they used to swap between the various cars. Plod did come round but I wouldn't be surprised if they just helped them to put the discs on the right cars.

Ah, common sense, now that can be a problem,
Over the years I've seen many an issue which stemmed from someone's idea of their common sense. DAVE.

Wales has for a long time been tough on speed limits.

Don't worry though....

As long as you are blind drunk, not wearing a seatbelt, and using your mobile phone while driving, you don't have to worry about maniacs driving at 21mph Laughing

20mph, lucky bastards. Some of our roads are 30kph (18.64mph)! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Down under we can park trailers on the road. One could get old cheap trailers, lock wheels so they don't get stolen or turn. Fill them with a few tonnes of stone waste & park them first in line. We have one parked near us & it has some plants growing in it. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
