I always have done mine from underneath as you have to be under there to drain the oil and its easier to remove the filter after just pushing the flexible turbo hose to one side those that can get to it from the top are all midgets with tiny hands Laughing

I'm 6'3" so wouldn't call myself a midget, and I wouldn't say my hands were tiny.

There seemed to be plenty of room. I'll find out next weekend when I do the change properly! I'm just hoping I won't find something that gets in the way as I haven't ordered the spanner 🤣

What caught me up was a slightly stripped sump plug..
I had to wait for a replacement part while my car sat in the driveway.

My advice - put a new washer AND plug in after draining the oil, and take it easy when tightening the sump plug (I think it's a 25nm torque, which isn't very tight)..

Well I can confirm that it is easy to replace the filter with a standard 1/2" ratchet and socket.

It literally took a few minutes.

I drove up my little driveway ramps.
Undid the 13mm bolts holding the undertray on.
Put a tray under and took out the 21mm sump plug.
From the top I put the ratchet and 27mm socket onto the filter housing, by putting my left arm down directly inline with the filter.
I then put my right arm down level with the oil filler cap.
I then used my right arm to move the ratchet handle up and down, whilst holding the socket on the filter housing with my left hand.
I kept checking to make sure I could take the socket off without fouling the fan housing.
Once it got close to the housing I removed the socket and ratchet and carried on undoing the housing by turning the whole housing by hand.
Once the housing was more or less out, the oil started to flow out more again from the sump, so I left it for a few minutes.
Replaced the filter, tightened the housing by hand for a while, then used the ratchet to continue tightening (again plenty of room to put the socket on).
Had to guess the torque though as my 1/2" didn't go that low on torque and my 3/8" doesn't have a 27mm socket.
Replaced the sump plug washer with the new one and put the sump plug back in.
Filled the oil back up.
Replaced the air filter whilst I waited for the oil to settle to check again.
Topped up slightly.
Replaced the under tray
Drove of the ramps and checked the level again on the flat.

So I can confirm there is absolutely no need to buy a 27mm flexible head ratchet spanner, so hopefully that will save a few people £20 or so.

There is plenty of room. I did try from below as well and although the ratchet handle was easy to move from below, it was difficult to hold the socket on with the other hand. From above both hands have plenty of room.

I won't mention the new slightly darker patches on my drive that appeared tonight 🤣🤣 or the extra list of jobs (and questions I now have) from other bits I inspected whilst under there.

I don't understand how that is possible. 🤔 There is simply no way my socket and ratchet will fit to take of the oil filter cap. I tried repeatedly before giving up and ordering the ratchet spanner.
I can only assume the fan housing or radiator are different. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Got to agree, I shredded many sets of gloves and my knuckles trying to get the filter out using spanners until I bought the flexy head ratchet ring spanner. There was no-way a socket, let alone a ratchet and socket was going to get into that space.

Maybe some cars have more radiators?
For example the auto needs cooling that the manual doesn't, maybe the TD4_e generates less heat and only has one fan? Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

It did make me wonder if there are some differences.

Ours is the 2.2 diesel, manual and has the stop start so is the td4_e.

Ours is an early 2010 on a 59 plate.

Absolutely plenty of room though, not even a scratch on my hands from doing it.

I don't know if you can see any differences from this photo...

Hi,

only thing I think NEEDS to be added to this is "ON Your Car" Laughing do you have aircon?

as got it agree with what others have said already and our 2013 you could Not get a socket and ratchet between the filter head and the fans, never mind undue it a bit and then take it off, the fans had to be lifted out of the way to even put a socket on (no spanner Whistle )

The filter change is straight forward with the Correct tools you just need to check WHAT the correct tools are for your car before doing it Rolling Eyes Laughing

well done for doing it, hope you put the correct Spec oil in for your car and not just any 5w-30

gearbox oil change next its only about £12 and even easier

Thumbs Up .
my first ever FL2 and I did keep it longer than most other cars!
But its now gone way up Norf

Laughing what model is yours?

I'm wondering if the auto cooler is the issue.

Is it possible for anyone to photograph the gap between the filter housing and the fan?

I'm really curious to work out what the differences are.

Would be great if you could post a picture similar to the one I put above along with the age, model, transmission and if it has Aircon or not.

I went to take photos of mine just now and can't even see the oil filter cap!
No way to get photo of it from above and CBA putting it up on ramps and taking the bellypan off just to take a photo.
It's down in there somewhere.
