Hi All and Hello!

Just sold my Freelander 1 after 17 years of faithful service and picked up a 2012 Freelander 2.

Looking for assistance with the headlamp upgrade as a bulb has gone. Light output is a bit rubbish anyway so I thought I'd change them all.

On the headlamps they are marked L-R, H11/D1S and then H7. Presume this is dipped and main beam respectively.

Are these Bi-Xenon?

Does this mean I can fit D1S (HID) and H7 bulbs respectively?

All a bit confusing and any help would be appreciated.

These lights are the projector ones and most were fitted with H7 (Main) and H11 (Dipped) - although some did have D1S but it was a fairly expensive option and not very common.

If yours has H11 at the moment then there's no ballast or self leveling (and you'll have a manual headlight angle adjuster on the dash by the light switch). You can fit an aftermarket conversion (which includes a ballast) and you will get really solid results as the housing and projector were designed to take an HID, so no unwanted glare or weird light patterns.

As this is an internet forum we will doubtless get some tooth-sucking and pitchforks along shortly to tell you it's tantamount to drowning kittens etc, but if you ignore that and just fit the aftermarket ones you will have a decent set of headlights.  Current driveway contents:

I thought the FL2 projector lens headlights had either an HID unit or a single halogen bulb, with both using a shutter for dipping.
Mine has the latter.

The projector lens was designed for HID units (but cheapskate JLR reserved those for higher models and put a single halogen in place of the HID for lower ones). Trouble is its rubbish both in terms of lumens and durability.
The aftermarket HID kits for projector lens work fine with the FL2 projector lens but are a complete no no for non-projector lens.
My HID conversion has passed MOTs without comment. Jules

I have the manual headlight adjuster to the right of the light switch in the car but these are the lights.

I'm also curious as to what an example of a HID kit would be.

bad design - blow a bulb and no headlight on that side. Its gets very hot too and they dont last long. i went down the HID conversion route - much better Jules

I'm all for better headlamps and HID conversions, where the headlamps are designed for HID bulbs.
Just be aware that MOT testers are now being instructed to look for and fail vehicles fitted with such conversions.

The wife's VW Eos had an aftermarket HID kit installed in the vehicles projector (they're also designed for factory HIDs) headlamps, however as the vehicle wasn't fitted with factory self leveling, the tester issued a major fail, and almost refused the vehicle leaves the test station without the correct headlamps being fitted.

Thankfully as I've use him for years, he allowed me to drive it home and rectify the issue, but the vehicle still has a major fail for incorrect headlamps on the MOT history.
So be aware that unofficial HID headlamps can cause an MOT failure, and possibly a prohibition order placed on the vehicle too. 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. Soon to be sold.

Thanks for the warning. Fingers crossed my MOT tester wont change his decision in the future.
But just to be safe I keep a spanner and the old bulbs in the car. Jules

Almost certain the OP has reflector lenses in which case Osram Nightbreakers or similar would be the option. later cars have Projector lenses taking HB3 bulbs as mentioned by Jules and the conversion kits are, in my opinion, a major safety improvement. Had both HB3 tungsten bulbs blow whilst travelling across country on unlit roads leaving me driving about 10 miles or so on side lights and fog lights - 'kin nightmare.  MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.
