DPF cleaner.

DPF cleaner 2010 HSE auto.
Having owned my FL2 now for 6 months.
When I bought it I purchased DPFCleaner from Halfords. Just to be safe.
As I learned more about the FL2 it seems my car does not have a DPF.
After 17 years on Disco1-2 I just assumed all modern cars( to me) had a DPF.
Question—- would it do any harm if I used the DPF cleaner next time I go a long run?
Thinking it may clean out the exhaust system.
Still learning about FL2. Jim A

Jim, You can check your vin number to see whether you have a DPF or not as they were as far as I am aware introduced around 2009 for all diesels (with a few exemptions) Character 8 in your vin number will be a C or E if it has a DPF. Good luck! Thumbs Up

To check if DPF is fitted - check the inlet manifold for 'Organ Pipes'.

Ian, 8th letter of VIN is a "B".
Also has "organ pipes" from which i had read that it does NOT have a DPF.
Back to query?
If i used the DPF cleaner in my car would it help clean the exhaust or possibly do any damage?
Thanks Jim A

Jim
Why don't you Goggle 'DPF Cleaners'.

This article gives a very good description of the action of the cleaner.

It would seem that the DPF Cleaners are designed to survive the engine combustion process, but then help fuel burn in the DPF to raise temperature more quickly. (I think)

Thats good ,it must have just missed out on the dpf then, ive got the original sales invoice and dpf was an optional extra, for £750 in 2009.(for eco warriors i presume!)

I think all diesel cars registered after January 2011 had to have euro 5 compliance , which needed a DPF . Then after late 2015 they needed to comply with euro6 .
As a euro5 DPF is pretty much redundant in terms of meeting proposed clean air zones which will be introduced all over the place, you are actually quite lucky not to have a DPF , as you have avoided a problematic bit of kit , that wouldn’t save CAZ charges .

The downside to not having euro 5 is paying a bit more for your road fund license than the euro 5 models I think . 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

2016 Subaru Outback SE 2.0 diesel SE Premium Lineartronic Sold 2024 after 8 years and 80k miles . Best Car I ever owned !

In answer to your question

The exhaust without a DPF does not need cleaning - ever.

To clean out the DPF, the additive must raise the exhaust temperature to burn off the soot, and by raise it I am thinking around to 600C (my DS is designed to do this every 300 miles), now do you deliberately want to cook the turbo and the exhaust manifold for no benefit?

Another thought is, the DPF fitted cars expect to see elevated exhaust temperatures, do they have additional heat sheilds? Would be a shame if that's the case, and you set fire to the underside of the car.

Give it to someone with a car fitted with a DPF, and be thankful you don't need it. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Andy, thank you for a good reply to my request.
I had come to that conclusion myself. My daughter is coming for Christmas with her Hyundai diesel Tucson.
She has a 164 mile drive home so the DPF cleaner can go in when she leaves.
Thanks to all and Merry Christmas Jim A
