And yet.

Reportedly the FL2 is the most reliable LR ever built.

Certainly talking about this to some LR technicians at our local dealership, they rate the FL2 in terms of high reliability, especially compared to the more modern LR offerings.

He has a point, if you buy a 100K+ FL2 that's only had the JLR specified maintenance.

Last time I looked he was still endorsing the sale of magic pills as an everlasting sludge-gathering fuel additive. And such statistics as he has are very anecdotal. I’ve been driving Astras since the 1980s and an FL2 since 2010 and to describe either as inherently unreliable simply doesn’t reflect my experience at all.

He is not very specific in his criticism, and doesn't give any facts.

True several user surveys class JLR near the bottom of the reliability tables, but the FL2 was developed in its Ford days and seem a very good product.
The main problems will occur as they get older, proper parts become scarce, and are maintained on the cheap.

Its a pity Mike Brewer didn't ask me as I have had 2 FL2s over the last 9 years (110k+ miles), and the only unplanned servicing has been the 'known problem' of the fuel gauge wiring (near the tank).

I think the later model FL2s will be future classics.

PS - Who said I'm biased? FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 76k+ miles) (MY2015)

Conversely, in the nearly 10 years and 30,000 miles that we owned a Freelander 2 it was probably £ for £ the worst vehicle I’ve ever owned for major component failure and cost . Obviously because of the length of time and low mileage ( bought at 30k sold at 60k ) the costs were spread over those years . If those costs had been spread over a normal 10k/3 year mileage they’d have been crippling . Having said that for the last 30 years of my working life I ran some pretty expensive company cars and there were some major issues with prestige brands . 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

2016 Subaru Outback SE 2.0 diesel SE Premium Lineartronic Sold 2024 after 8 years and 80k miles . Best Car I ever owned !

2023 Toyota Hilux invincible X 2.8 Auto .
