Geek needs help

Apologies in advance if this is a silly question but computers and such aren't my expertise Wink
Our old iPad is reaching the end of its useful life and are looking to have my mother's Lenovo laptop which she's no longer able to use.
Qu 1 Is there a quick and very easy way to transfer everything from the iPad to the laptop that even I could do?
Qu 2 If there is, does that effectively remove everything from the iPad to the extent we could then safely bin it?
Thanks

I am by no means an expert, but have some experience of playing with Apple products. Firstly, Apple are very picky about what you can and cannot import/export on their equipment. Next, assuming that you have an associated iCloud on your Apple account, back up everything on the iPad to that. Log out. On the laptop, log in to the same Apple account and see if you can download the date that you want to keep. As said earlier, you will probably lose the apps. If you can do this, you can then easily and quickly erase the iPad by going into settings and performing a full reset. It will then be completely clean. If you cannot redeem anything from the Apple account then you need more specialised advice. Bpn chance.

Dont even get me started on Apple products ! I lost a day of my life last week migrating from an Android phone to an Iphone ( neccesity not choice ! ). I still have no whatsapp historical conversations, although I did transfer my number over, I simply refuse to pay for a program to perform this action for me when I am perfectly able to do it myself IF it were an option.

I wish you luck, but do not think that you will find your quest easy if my experience is anything to go by. Others may well be along with more experience and a workable solution. I hope so......

You should be able to transfer anything that is in JPEG and MP4 format, any documents in Adobe, however any documents in the IOS equivalent of Office won't transfer in a recognisable format, I would suggest you either download an app if possible that you can import into that has a generic recognised output, it may be possible to use Linux software which tends to convert to windows or IOS my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Dartman, thank you. I appreciate that's probably a fine solution but guess I might need that interpreted into laymans language Laughing
Presently I switch it on, I tap stuff in, it (usually) responds.

If you click on a picture without opening it will tell you if it is JPEG often it has JPEG in its title number, MP4 is most video, Linux is a free software which you can load onto most windows PC's but probably not on Apple products especially ipads, but you can transfer the file in Apple format then use the Linux program on the PC to use it, having said all that I suggest you find a friend who is more conversant in IT to help you, Laughing my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

My Old iPad Air 2 very recently expired - swollen battery (which held a charge for three minutes on a good day) and a resultant split case where the battery pushed an edge of the screen out of the case. No trade in value at all.

First thought was to buy a new iPad Air at £579 to replace it but in the end, I bought an entry level 2021 iPad for £319 delivered - it is absolutely super and in most aspects, streets ahead of my expired Air 2. Everything from the old device simply transferred to the new so up and running again in no time at all.

I’d find winding the clock back ten years to when everything was done on a lap top difficult now.

If you are not a techie wiz then I think Reggie has the answer - ignore the Lenovo laptop and buy another Apple device.

Apple's great strength is the way they make all of their products work easily together. Their great weakness is that this means all of your data is locked into the Apple system and if you want to use devices from another manufacturer it is quite hard. It can be done - phone or computer repair shops might be able to do it for you.

Congoblue and ReggiePerrin, I accept that buying ourselves another iPad is another option. It's just that my mother bought the laptop a few years ago 'off the shopping channel' and barely did more than that, an on-line Sainsburys shop once a week Rolling with laughter
With failing eyesight, it's not been used for about a year so would probably suit our needs (emails and Internet mainly) for the time-being; and would also save us shelling out money.

It would help if you say what is on your ipad that you want to keep, you should be able to connect the laptop to the ipad with a usb cable, ie it has the ipad power connector one end and a standard usb connector at the other end, go into Windows Explorer on the laptop, select This PC, you will then get the ipad as a drive alongside drive C and if it has one Drive E the disc drive or optical drive, the ipad will possibly be Drive F, double click it and you should get a list of files or /and folders come up, you can then double click on each item in turn and either it will open or inform options to open the file, or say it can't and offer to search the internet for a program to open the file, you just keep double clicking until you can go no further. Many files or folders may come up as empty as you probably never used those options or didn't even know they existed. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

The only apple things I've ever owned were edible.

However, I find teenagers are very good at this sort of thing - do you not have one to hand? Laughing

It would help if you could give more info about what sort of files and their size.

I'm guessing but I imagine that Apple software (Office type stuff) saves files in a native apple format, by default, which is unreadable by anything non-apple. Can these files not be opened and saved then saved in a more generic file format prior to transfer?

Could you not transfer them via a USB stick? Jules

I have a setup where everything on my iphone is uploaded to the iCloud and then I use iCloud for PC and download it there. I only tend to use it for photos but it means that if I take a picture on my phone it appears on my PC a few minutes later. Any documents on my apple device can be emailed to yourself on the PC 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I have no Apple experience, but I have always thought that by using .jpeg for pictures and .pdf for documents I was distributing in formats that were readable by most operating systems.

I used the command 'Save as' to change formats before sending.

Does Apple support these formats, if so, the files could be transferred using Dartman's (Mass Storage?) method as outlined above, once they were saved as a commonly accepted format. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Well I picked the lap top up this morning and been tinkering around with it ever since, Not sure it`s going to be a viable option as its sooooo slowwwww Yawn and there`s a message popping up about the internal battery needing replacement.
May just have to think about replacing the existing iPad, which is certainly looking to be the easiest option
