Rear Diff problems - after some advice

Hi there

I bought my 2012 Freelander Dynamic at the end of last year from a local dealer with a 2 year warranty. Before I bought it I was told the rear Diff had been replaced as well as the Haldex pump by their mechanic and the car was now in good working order.

6 months down the line I noticed a judder in the rear wheels pulling away at junctions and was informed by the same garage that the Haldex unit had failed. I tried to claim this on the warranty but was declined due to the Haldex not being specifically named on the policy! I therefore paid around £900 for a new Haldex to be fitted along with four new tyres.

Around a month after this repair I noticed a whining sound which quickly got a lot louder. I took it to a local independent LR specialist who told me that the rear diff bearing had failed and was not safe to drive. Back to the warranty company again and after an inspection was told this was also not covered due to it being an age related 'wear and tear' issue rather than a sudden mechanical failure.

The LR specialist garage are quoting around £1k for a new rear diff unit. I have gone back the dealer to complain and they are recommending their mechanic can fix it with a reconditioned rear diff for under £500.

I am now very confused which way to go given their previous work on the Haldex/rear diff failed within a year and therefore reluctant to go back to them. However the LR specialist quote does seem quite high and presumably involves fitting a new genuine LR part rather than a re-conditioned unit.

Would appreciate any advice as I am about to tear my hair out!

cheers

I'd be having a word with Trading Standards or Citizens Advice as well as another vote for Bell Engineering.

I believe you have some protection under the law but not sure if that is for 6months or 12 from purchase date - as I understand it any defects that appear within the timescale are seen as being in effect at the time of purchase & thus the traders problem. 2014 Freelander 2 TD4 Manual Dynamic

I bought a 2103 Freelander 2 and paid for a 3 year warranty.
Soon after purchase there was oil on the drive under the engine
Took it back to garage where i bought it from and they sound that the rear crankshaft oil seal was leaking.
Under the warranty the front crankshaft seal is covered but not the rear as the gear box has to come out.
The garage agreed to carry out the work at their cost.
Great service from the garage .

Now the Haldex pump has failed and surprise to hear from LR that they have been in touch with the warranty company and they have agreed to pay for new pump. Glad i paid the £300 for the 3 year warranty .
