Just wanted to say thanks for all the forum users who have supplied so much useful info on this forum. I've dug around a lot over the last few weeks and now have my very own Freelander 2 HSE. TD4 manual, in Lago Grey, and I love it so far. Also, despite all the non-LR forums telling me that it would explode/implode/generally fail as soon as I paid for it, it hasn't so far. Only three days in though...

Like any car, service it properly, budget & save for the bigger things so you don't feel under pressure down the track. Basic stress releasing stuff!

We are keeping ours until we need wheelchairs! Currently doing some minor additions so it's ready when we can cross State borders again to get into central Australia.

Lovely. I have a 60 reg facelift (sadly a GS) but I bloomin love it.

It has had a few costly repairs/replacements, but none of them have come close to the sum of the monthly payments a new car would be.

As others have said, service it properly and just keep an eye on it.

Check the timing belt and accompanying bits have been changed and listen for any diff noises and slipping clutch if it's a manual.

But enjoy. It's a great car. Learned to drive in 2011.

Depreciation is the thing people often fail to take into account when considering the cost of running an older vehicle as opposed to a new one.

In 2009 I bought a 1 year old BMW 3 series with 12K on the clock. The previous owner had said goodbye to £14K in that first year due to the depreciation.

I ran the car for 7 years and lost £14K - apart from routine servicing sand the odd minor repair it was fine (mainly body work damage from having to park in NHS hospital staff car parks). A cheap car compared with what the first owner forked out.

Well I say fine - the adaptive headlights were a constant problem that BMW was unable to solve. Jules

My strategy is usually to buy a 3 year old low mileage car and keep it for 3 years or less than 80k miles, this time is different due to the virus and I am doing so little mileage that I will keep it for another year. I haven't done the maths but in my mind you either spend money on depreciation or repairs and after 7 years you can expect things to start going wrong regardless of mileage.

Interesting to see the price of used FL2s on the LR approved website. Not much different to what I paid for mine 3.5 years ago. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I tend to do 20-25k per annum so I've historically tried to buy cheap high-mileage but looked-after cars and run them for as long as I can. A bit like bangernomics but without the ability to buy, say, an old 7-series because of the crippling mpg.

However, lockdown and the continuing remote working means I can probably (hopefully!) afford to invest in the FL2 and still run it properly.

Our longer-term plan is to do a self-build in the north-east of Scotland near my parents - currently we live in the West Midlands of England - so it has to be able to do the motorway miles as well as the farm tracks and fields. I think I've made the sensible choice.  2010 HSE TD4 Lago Grey
