England 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto Fuji White
Rear end clonk

Hi, new member here, I have a FL2 HSE 2013 Auto, 72k miles. Sometimes when I apply the e/handbrake there is a loud clonk from the rear end and the car jolts forward a bit- almost feels like someone has run into the back. It doesn't do it all the time, just now and again.
Any ideas before I take it to a garage?

No it is when I've pulled up ,say at traffic lights, I put the parking brake on and the car sort of jerks forward a bit with a loud " clonk", feels like someone has run into the back of the car.

OK, so this only happens when in "D" (at a light) and apply the EPB in "D"? Since, I don't have a EPB, I am going to wait for a poster who does what you do to address this technique and issue?

I am going to guess this is the brake recalibrating electronically to hold the vehicle in "D" at a light. BTW, I am going to say that's not a normal technique. Of course, I may be misunderstanding what you are actually doing. I personally would use the PB only in "P" or "N".

I don't keep mine in D when stationary unless it's going to be just a few seconds. Normally jut knock it into N and keep footbrake on. Shouldn't be a clunk when you apply the epb. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Thanks for the replies, I'll try to be a bit clearer- When I stop eg at traffic lights I press the epb and SOMETIMES maybe half a second later the car jolts forwards with a noise (clonk) as if someone has run into the back. It comes with a quite loud noise.
It might not happen again for a while, but it is rather disconcerting!
I have read of problems with the Haldex - could this be at fault? Otherwise the car drives as normal.....

Hi, as its an Auto, it will have the Aisin Warner box. I have a Volvo V70 with this Auto box, the valve block in the bottom of the gearbox wears indents over time, therefore gearchanges "hang" and the gears release with a Bang on changing down, it can break the Bevel Box. Volvo forums suggest reprogramming, but a £500 valve block will help. Flushing the gearbox with Yamaha Auo transmission fluid might be a short term fix. They have an electric hand brake as well, but its not connected.

Thanks for your input but no problems with gearbox changing up or down- car only done 72k so that probably not the issue.

See if it happens by just sitting with your foot on the foot brake, no handbrake.

Thanks for all your replies, I took it to my local indie today to see if they had any ideas. After a test run with the boss the car ran perfectly, sods law!! then he tried the Eparking brake and released the footbrake immediately, and guess what? it jerked forwards a bit. Tried again, but left the brakes on for a couple of seconds
and guess what again .........................................
it didn't jerk!!! Lo oks like that is the answer, just keep the brake pedal pressed for a second or so and all is good.

That clears that problem then. I have a Rangerover with the EPB, that is very smooth in operation, but then I always have my foot on the brake until it is in Park.

Hi, page well would you believe it - it did exactly this twice today, no parking brake, just the footbrake. When I took my foot off the brake it jerked. Did it twice then seemed to be ok afterwards.
Never done it with footbrake before.
Yesterday the mechanic was talking about a software upgrade to the gearbox, I will give him a ring tomorrow.

This fault is pretty common.
There is a software update which will help a bit. Had mine done 2 years ago at stealers. Lasted about a week, though it isn’t as bad as it was.
I work round it by slipping in to neutral if I’m gong to be stationary for more than a few seconds.
With practice you’ll feel when it’s going to clunk. The creep forward disappears as you start to lift your foot off the brake.
If you use the Search facility for Autobox jump, there’s plenty on here about it including the software upgrade bulletin.
