Alarm indicator flashes whilst driving

On a random basis, the alarm indicator light flashes on my 2007 i6 after the engine is started and continues whilst driving until I stop, turn off and remove the key. When I restart, it has stopped flashing. This happens about once a month and doesn't seem to be accompanied by any other connected ill-effects, apart from my irritation.

Any ideas from the marvellous contributors to this invaluable resource?

My first thought is battery, how old is it?
is it taking and holding a charge?
these motors are power hungry and any failings in the battery
will throw up an assortment of issues.
the view on here is, if the battery is over fours old then chances are
it's on borrowed time.
Oh yes...Hello and Welcome. Laughing DAVE.

Also, this is just a thought,
try switching on ignition without starting the engine,
then once all the warning lights have extinguished
go straight to engine start, see if that makes any difference,
as you will have given all the modules a chance to activate correctly. DAVE.

Many thanks Dave.

Battery is 18 months old, so probably OK. I did not want to launch into a list of everything I have done to the vehicle with the help of this forum and will save that for a longer experience/thank you post. I just could not find this particular issue/symptom by searching here.

I have experienced the usual electrical glitches: key fob rejection plus resetting of dashboard trip info and zeroing of mileometer, random alarm soundings, false bonnet lock warnings etc and have now had a second earth lead fitted and bonnet micro-switch replaced.

I have worked through a long list of transmission and other issues: replaced autobox valve body and haldex pump and now (touch dashboard wood!) all is smooth at 139k running on LPG for the last 80k.

At the moment, the only outstanding issue is the blinking light and I was interested that nobody else seems to have experienced it. I will follow your advice and see if it disappears for good.

Thanks again for your interest.

I may also replace the 'battery backed sounder', which seems to be a a regular source of alarm-related issues and at £25 for the part is probably worth doing!

I do find it amusing, when I am driving along with the light blinking, that the handbook claims "Indicator flashes once per second - alarm is armed and engine immobilised"!

IIRC the battery back up sounder is a totally different
tone to the main alarm, I do wonder if you have a shorting somewhere,
I had expected one of our more knowledgeable owners would
have responded by now. Neutral DAVE.

OK, I have never had this happen. I do know that when the pattern of this flash changes it can be from different things. Obviously it related to the anti-theft system, the immobilizer. When I flashed a custom program to my instrument panel, I was unable to start the vehicle, the red light pattern had changed and it was a different sequence but shorter and faster. I re-flashed twice but the same result. Eventually, I went through any codes triggered (even though SDD had done this) and cleared them and finally was able to start the vehicle. BTW, all codes, not just the check engine light.

So, the fact that you are able to start the vehicle and the pattern changes is somewhat puzzling since I believe that's the immobilizer communicating something.

Try reading, recording and clearing all codes?

Thanks for your thoughts MotionInc. No fault codes registered at present, since installation of second earth lead and new bonnet sensor and one or other may have cured the problem, but I doubt it was the bonnet micro switch. The issue is, as always with these things, that the problem is sporadic.

Again, thank you and Dave for your thoughts. I will report back in a while, if only to say, it has gone away!

All the best
