GB stickers no longer legal?

According to this article on the BBC website, the government has changed our international letter code from GB to UK.

So the many millions of us who have GB incorporated in our number plates (with or without the EU stars) will have to replace them before we go abroad again.

If it wasn't September 29th, I would suspect an April Fool's joke!

That is true, whether the government have bowed to pressure but GB was originally the coverage of all islands in the British Isles which contained southern Ireland, though with the exception of the Channel Isles, since Ireland became independent the more correct description is the UK.
You will possibly get away with GB except possibly in France, I knew someone who drove with an Ecosse number plates surrounded by the EU stars and he was never challenged. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Just be grateful that you can travel. Down here it is near impossible to travel between States. For 3 months I can't travel more than 5km & we haven't had a Covid case in our suburb for months, & then it was only one case that was isolated. Christmas is not looking good... again.

As for getting out of the country, basically not possible.

If all we had to do to solve our predicament was two new letters the printers would be in meltdown. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

The EU won't give a damn, this is all about publicly trying to pull NI back in to the fold after it was set adrift with Brexit and the boarder in the Irish sea!

I'm not sure when it was updated but .gov.uk site link is below:

https://www.gov.uk/displaying-number-plate...dentifiers

Regarding "Driving outside the UK" it states the following:

If your number plate includes the UK identifier with the Union flag (also known as the Union Jack), you do not need a UK sticker.

However, you will need to display a UK sticker clearly on the rear of your vehicle if your number plate has any of the following:

a GB identifier with the Union flag
a Euro symbol
a national flag of England, Scotland or Wales
numbers and letters only - no flag or identifier
If you’re in Spain, Cyprus or Malta, you must display a UK sticker no matter what is on your number plate.

If you have a GB sticker, cover or remove it before driving outside the UK.

You do not need a UK sticker or number plate to drive in Ireland.

We drive into Italy occasionally in our Swiss plated car and although never stopped ourselves a friend was stopped for not displaying a "CH" sticker on the Italian side of the border, I guess it'll depend on the individual at any given time.

Local police are hardly going to give a **** what badge or flag you have on your number plate, unless they have reason to stop you for another matter.... Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

My understanding of it was that you didn't need to replace GB-marked numberplates, you would just have to show a UK sticker as well.

I am waiting for the cars gender to be required on a plate so that people do not get confused when the ignition "wakes up".

Picked my new caravan up last Wednesday, 29/09. The dealer, as a matter of course makes up a new number plate and with GB ending and UK starting the day before on 28/09 - they made up a plate with a Union Flag and... GB Rolling with laughter

Not really difficult to buy adhesive labels that stick over the "GB and stars" and replace it with "UK and union flag". £1.35 a set on eBay, 5 minutes to stick on - crooked to drive the perfectionists at work mental Very Happy Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
