I got a rear nearside puncture on the M5 last week, and with having no spare and not having read up on the use of the gunk kit (i just needed to get out the pathetic smart motorway refuge asap) i managed to get enough air into the tyre to limp off the motorway and into the nearest tyre place in Worcester.
Unfortunately this was Kwik Fit who pronounced my tyre totally useless (fair enough) and the 'only' tyre they had in stock to fit was a £200 continental cross contact UHP E. I normally stick to around £130 a tyre for semi premium brand.

To cap it all off the front nearside tyre is worn on the outer edge so ideally needs replacing too, totally gutted as all 4 were General Grabber GT with around 5mm all round

Some reviews of the continental are not as good as they could be, with poor wear rate being the most common issue.

my dilemma is should i replace the remaining GG GT with 3 more Continental to match the newest, or should i replace all 4 with something like a Scorpion All season tyre ??

looking forward to some sensible (and some not so sensible ) suggestion

When I changed tyre size I chucked out a lot of kilometres of tread on some of my 6 wheels. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Agree with Reggie but if you are going to use it as a spare you could buy any pattern wheel of the correct diameter for a spare

I agree with the above posts, that is, buy another 19 inch rim.

I did this with my FL2 XS, as I wanted a real spare in th boot.

I found a brand new 19 inch 'Dynamic' pattern wheel and tyre for under £200. My XS had 'Metro' style diamond cut rims on the rest, but I found it hard to see the difference unless you really looked closely at car.

New rims seem to be getting rarer and more expensive.

it might well look as new but the tyre thats fitted on that single wheel is already 8 years old
must never heard of rotating the wheels to include the Spare

 .

based on opinions on here and disco4 forum i think im going to be changing all 4 wheels... probably to Scorpion Zero/Verde all season, and then hopefully buy a 2nd hand 19'' wheel and put the continental on that for a spare

Hi, I put 16 inch wheels on my 2009 FL2 as the roads around here are pretty potholed. Sixteens take Transit van tyres. I have sets of spare 17inch wheels and tyres. I have two sets with vitually new tyres on in the shed, not very old too. I always like to have spare tyres in case of trouble. I don't cover 40k miles a year now so its an old habit hard to break.

Had Continental's cross contact as per original spec fitted in 2016; did 39,400 on deliberately downsized 17" wheels, across the whole of europe, alps, pyrenees, etc. Fantastic tyre, secure, smooth, stable. Changed them in 2019 for Pirelly all season; what a disaster. Thought there was something seriously wrong with alignment or steering mech,, had it checked three times. Car wandered all over the place with every change of road surface, potholes, white lines etc. I could even tell the sex of a dead bird! They failed MOT after 23,000 and changed back to Contis in May. What a staggering difference; the car is immediately back to it's stable, secure positive self with no wandering issues. Speak as you find by Continentals are now my default tyre.

i have had 4 Scorpion Verde All season put on and kept the Continental Cross Contact, its currently for sale as i cant find a suitable 19'' wheel to put it on right now.

If it doesnt sell then ill just keep it and continue looking for a wheel to use as a spare
