I`m afraid to ask but i`m sure I read somewhere that you could have some specially adapted bars without the need for the roof rails.

Please advise if you know of any possibilities as I am amazed how many Freelander 2`s seem to not have roof rails

The Thule company produces a range of roof bars, cycle racks, etc that fit a whole range of cars. Google for it and you'll fint it.

I just use a set of Thule Roofbars with mine. They can take a bit of time to set up the first time but they are ok. I got mine from www.roofbox.co.uk, much cheaper than the local halfords!

I used that discount as well, but wasn't going to own to to being a caravan owner as well!!

Maybe I`m being thick but nobody appears to be answering my question

I know I can get roof bars etc but they are all designed to go onto rails from what I can see.

Bottom line is MUST I have roof rails or is athere an alternative

to make it as clear as mud

Very easy to put on, though there is a bit of a whistle/wind noise when using them, but i presume anything strapped to the roof would make a noise  Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I'm not sure what the difference in noise would be but I have got the aerobars rather than the standard bars. They are also supposed to be better for the fuel economy.

CG I might as well admit, I'm a caravanner and proud.

The van that lives on my farm is coming up for sale soon, I've told Mrs G that its an older type and is incompatible with freelanders (in my mind thats not untrue) At work

i thought about getting the aero bars, but my way of thinking is

I use them to carry wooden boarding and stuff that wouldn't fit in my car, and the standard are flatter for this, I put them on collect whatever and take them off straight after so a little wind noise is no great pain

I don't have a roof box, but i presume these would make a certain amount of noise anyway even with aero bars as they will have lost the aerodynamic ability by strapping a lump of plastic on as well Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

We use a narrow roofbox so probably half the bar is exposed. I think most of the noise comes from the mounts to the car. We had an A4 avant with roof rails before and they had a small clamp rather than the big foot on the picture above.
