Finally resolved - as suggested by Alex and Thrud, it was the EGR. Mapped it out at an indy shop few days ago, so far happy with the outcome. No more dreaded hesitation, better throttle response at low rpms, overall tighter feel of the engine. Good luck to anyone with similar symptoms, hope this helps.

Found this thread whilst trying to solve very similar issue... Sometimes the car (07, 2.2 diesel auto) will run completely fine, other times it will stutter on idle and sometimes just cut out completely. I blanked the EGR a few weeks ago and im not sure if that made it worse... may remove the egr plate.

Kasapoff - re 'mapping out' the egr - Am i correct in my understanding that this involves remapping / tuning of the engine and telling the engine to ignore the EGR?

Cheers! Andy

In my case it involved updating the engine settings, yes. If you take a small video, I can confirm if the problem is with the EGR. There are some clear patterns.
