Dash warning - Reduced Engine Performance

Hi everyone, I hope you are all well and I hope you are able to give me some pointers as to what could be the issue.

About 3 weeks ago, whilst driving on a hot day the wife had a loss of power. Still moved but ata snails pace. It was a little scary as she was pulling out of a junction. Turned the car off and went back after a coffee and everything was fine.

2 weeks ago something similar, but didn’t it a number of times on the 10 minute ride home. Turned off air on and it picked up a bit and got us home.

This week, again happened a few times on a short journey.

I just turned on the car and the dash message centre is telling me Reduced Engine Performance.

Does anyone have any ideas on what the issue could be and how to fix it? I am afraid that I don’t have a machine that tells me the error codes. If at all possible, if someone else has had the same issue, could they give me a step by step guide of what they fixed and in what order until the vehicle was back to normal. Or alternatively, do I need to take it to a Land Rover garage to see what fault codes are showing?

I think you need to get the codes read to start with as it could be a number of things.
You can buy a basic code reader that will point you in the right direction for £12-£15, which is a lot cheaper than a dealer.

Where abouts in the uk are you? There might be someone local to you on here that might read the codes for you.

Just had this issue myself, my problem was a split intercooler hose. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Apparently the normal hose which splits is the short one which attached to throttle body intake. It's easy to remove and check, 7mm socket for the jubilee clips. Naturally mine was the less common and more difficult to access pipe onto the intercooler itself which necessitated removal of front bumper. Not really difficult but needing both front wheels off to remove wheel arch liners to get at some of the bolts. Just in process of putting mine all back together now, £60 for a britpart replacement hose from an indy. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

I had the same problem, it was the intercooler hose under the manifold. Now the reason why? The cure was a new Turbocharger and EGR Valve. The turbo actuator sticks due to carbon build-up as the EGR Valve gets full of carbon and sticks. It sends the wrong message to the ECU, which also clogs the vanes of the turbo up until they stop moving. This strips the plastic gears in the actuator. The result is reduced performance, and, or too much boost to burst pipes. Dodgy people disconnect the link just before selling the car!

2010 FL2 auto HSE
well, just experienced the RPM today.
Had the car for nearly 3 months, longest run to date has been about 40 miles, lots of short runs 5-10 miles about 3/4 times a week.
Decided to give it a good run today.
Onto the M8 at St James, car well warmed up, did a run of about 8 miles at 65/70mph, heading back, passing a truck at about 75 lost all serious power.
Limp home at 50 mph. Read everything on here i could find. When cooled down check intercooler hose, totally good, blue hose.
Still shows RPM. Going down to Beith tomorrow to my local guy and we will run a diagnostic check.
Car was running absolutely perfect up till loss of power.
Just have to see what shows up. Really browned off. Jim A

Jim,

Assume you checked the hose leading to inlet manifold near the top of the engine? My problem was the rubber hose on the other end of that plastic pipe where it connects to the intercooler low down on the driver's side front (UK).
If you have a blue hose someone has been in there before and changed to a silicone one, I'd wager its the bottom one that hasn't been replaced before. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Question? How safe is it to drive the car at present?
Would this have happened anyway or did my decision to go for a decent run upset something after weeks of short mileages? Jim A

Jim, There would normally be a restricted performance message on the dash when a hose splits. It will clear when you cycle the ignition but come back again when the revs get above 1,800 or so. Although it is a pain you can still use the car but it will be down on power (as you have experienced) You might be lucky and it won`t go into limp mode if you can keep the revs down by using command shift but I would only be driving the car to get it checked out! Thanks again for all the suggestions.
Took it down to my local guy, who does a good bit on Freelanders,.
Plugged in his equipment, cleared all the faults.
Comes up with that particular year had a known fault, supposedly cured by a software update.
Car was in Taggarts last month for the oil change and software updates by landrover.
All software updates are done, checked this.
Anyway, bottom line is that the REP has gone for the now.
Not showing at all and car driving magnificent as usual.
Fingers crossed this was just a wee glitch. Jim A
