Battery issues

Hi all, my battery seems to drain pretty fast, what I mean is it shows 12.4v standing doing nothing but as soon as I open the tailgate or leave the door open for a short while I can't start the car, I get the dreded click click.
Freelander 2 SD4 2014 with original battery, help please guys

12.4 sounds low - new battery time I think

I recently swapped out my 2014 original for a Yuasa 9115, Varta F21 seems a popular choise also - both 80ah for stop start 2014 Freelander 2 TD4 Manual Dynamic

Get a new battery.
What do you expect from a 7 years old battery?

On a different note, a new battery is worth about a tank full of diesel.
How many tanks full of diesel were in 7 years?
Why some people fail to change the battery sooner and then ask themselves why the car let them down?...

at least batteries are available now for sensible money - could not get one for months for anything less than 2x price a few months ago 2014 Freelander 2 TD4 Manual Dynamic

Battery on my previous Honda Accord lasted 18 years without any issue at all - that's why I went with Yuasa one for FL2 - always had awesome batteries from Yuasa Bow down 2014 Freelander 2 TD4 Manual Dynamic

I think that the battery on a FL2 has to do a lot more than an 18+ year old Civic.

My neighbours new Honda, the battery lasted 2 years, one cell died. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Batteries age from the day of its manufacture & after 4 years they are on borrowed time. The problem is you may still be able to start the car so it may seem ok, but the AH of the battery has dramatically reduced.

If the car is going to be sitting around get a Victron Bluetooth charger or similar & keep lead acid batteries topped up. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Depending on the date of manufacturer your FREEL2 is likely 7 or 8 year old.

For my 2008

Battery #1 failed at 3 years

Battery #2 failed at 7 years

By the time my LR2 was the same age as your Freel2 I was on my third battery.

Note: my LR2 is 13 and I am on battery #4


I agree with the sentiment to get a new battery.

PS on my LR2 if the Voltage dips too low when starting the engine sometimes it latches up a module and then the batter will drain over night.

Well - it was an Accord, not a Civic Whistle and yes, I completely agree - the FL2 is undoubtedly way harder on a battery - that said, with my 2014 FL2 I only changed the (original 2014) battery this year and it had only just started showing a low battery warning at times (and none of the other symptoms that a failing battery seems to display with some FL2s) - I think a great deal is to do with useage and care of a battery.

Or perhaps batteries are more of a lottery than we think? maybe I have just been luckier than some others - I certainly would not be happy with a battery that failed at 3 years and Lightwaters neighbour I assume had a bad battery from the get go & I imagine Honda replaced it under warranty. Hopefully my new battery will last well, or I could be replacing it in a few years - "who knows" seems to be the answer judging from the experiences shared here! I guess I'll need to keep my fingers crossed but be prepared to swap out a battery if there is any question - as some of you have said the cost of a battery is negligible & certainly seems to be the 1st step to take with any of these types of issues, something I will certainly bear in mind thanks to the shared experiences here

My FL2 was new to me in 2020 so I cannot report on the type of useage and care the vehicle had before my ownership but it has all the hallmarks of a well maintained vehicle - was the battery on borrowed time when I got it? almost certainly & likely way past the date where that could be expected on a battery that works so hard Thumbs Up

I'm sure a new battery will fix the OPs issues - at the very least a good 1st step. I'd also recommend the regular use of a smart charger, something I have done for years now. Incidentally, one thing I always do is to switch off the stop/start system on both the FL2 and 2nd vehicle (this one IS a Honda Civic Laughing ) 2014 Freelander 2 TD4 Manual Dynamic

I have the 2013 battery which came with the car in garage & use it for testing things & it works well. Replaced it in 2017 as we were in the remote outback. A long way from road service.

As soon as we can travel again, looks like we have to wait until next year, I will stick in a new battery.

We have been barely using the car so I make sure it is topped up regularly as well as the four 26AH auxiliary batteries.

The Freelander's battery has a barrier to keep heat away from it. I have also noticed that the car's interior ventilation circulates past the battery to help keep it cooler. Someone has thought this out very well.

Two things that shorten the life of a lead acid battery is heat & not keeping it charged. It's why I have stuck extra insulation around the battery box. With our high ambient temperatures if I can stop any engine bay heat, all the better. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
