Hi i am looking to buy a 4x4 in August, having considered a Hyundai Tucson (yes i know mad isnt the word) i was delighted to see that i can afford an 07/57 FL2 TD4 GS or if i want a bit on finance maybe an XS.

Is there anything on 2007 FL2's that i need to look for in the way of faults (apart from the ususal such as looking for excessive off roading and a tow bar on the back (dont go there CG )?

I've got an 07 XS, and no probs with anything, bar a couple of little niggles.

Personnly, I wouldn't worry about offroading or towbar, it's what it was designed for.

Have you had a test drive yet? I know the first time I drove one, I knew I had to have, and still smile driving it now, nearly 2 years later, so you won't be disappointed

In the way of recall faults there hasn't been many since launch

Sunroof drain tube re-routing
The modified sunroof mechanism
The pre heater recall
The seat belts wear the B-Pillar a little (not a recall, but dealers can replace if asked due to a Tech Service Bulletins)

I would also check for noise from the power steering pump as a hand full have had a clogged filter, and check for even tire wear, not a big problem but 4x4 wheel alignment isn't the cheapest.

I wouldn't read too much into to odd scratch or mark on the underneath of a FL2, or excessive mud stains as they are a proper off road vehicle and can handle such, but if you see bent or dings use you judgement

You must buy a Freelander 2, Don't be suduced by a newer or better spec 4x4 for your money, freelanders are by far the best.
I tested X3, Shogun, Shogun sport, Navara, Outlander, X-trail (and I am still 100% sure I bought the best car.

(I didn't bother with a Kia and stuff like that-as I don't like the bamboo interior)

Thanks for the advice, yes i have been lurking for a few days as i didnt want to post a thread that was already covered...so had lots of reading to do. I am lucky in that i live about 2 miles from Rockingham Castle and the Land Rover Experience Centre so i will try to get a half day in an FL2.

The LR dealer at Rockingham is also a specialist in fitting vehicles for serious off roading trips and a neighbours son has just has his Defender kitted out there for an overland trip to Iran.

These next 4 months cant come quicly enough

if your after a LRE, get yourself onto the Landrover website and occasionally there is a flyer to register for an experience, first 100 get a freebie

Now I dont want to upset the vaners but I would avoid vehicles with towbars like the plague, yes it may have been owned by someone who knows what they are doing but chances are it was driven by a towing novices who has burnt the clutch countless times in attempting to reverse. Not many people get chance to practice reversing trailers and end up learning on the job and cooking the clutch as they go.
Also towing has to add to the strain on the car so why not simply avoid them and find one with no bar? At work

II have just got an 08 gs auto after having a Tucson for nearly 3 years. I will not have anything said against the Tucson as i enjoyed it for what it was a decent car, as far as the frl2 is concerned I love the looks but have some reservations at the moment especially regarding the consumption and at the moment I am due to go to the dealers for the third time in 8weeks this time with an annoying rattle in the back At the moment the jury is out

I agree Brian, with my Sportage i couldn't find many faults at all, I lost heart when it took many many months to repair after a accident, (more the fact it was repaired as it was less than two months old)

The main thing was, when i got it it was the lower powered engine, they increased it just after i got mine (nice that the dealer didn't bother telling me, even when my car was made to order and not stock )

Well i will be getting an Auto and not a manual, just seen a really nice XS 07 td4 on the landrover website with 20,000 miles for £18,495 so looks like i will be tempted to finance the remaining £4k over my cash budget

I wasnt trying to state that the tucson was a bad car otherwise i wouldnt have looked at it in the first place, just always wanted a landy and with todays economic climate is the perfect time to get one. Just hope there is an example like the one above when i come to buy in August.

why not get a GS then use the money saved to get it re-upholstered with leather for a new car feel and maybe upgrade the wheels too?

Well there is more than just the leather difference between the GS and XS, the bluetooth connection alone is worth it for me because of the mileage i do to whilst needing to be contactable (only in the office 1 day a week) and in the end the company pays for the mileage, in addition the xs has the heated and electric memory seats.

The GS is really good but only £3k less as a used car, but will prob cost me more than £3k to get the added extras retrofitted, and to be honest i dont have the time or inclination to do that.

Thanks for the option though George...oh and the colour, jury still out on that one Black or Stornaway/Lago not sure yet but black is a nightmare to clean but looks awesome when it is.
