Reduced egine performance (EGR)

I have Intermitting reduced egine performance and engine light comming on.
I get the following error code :
P0405-77 (6Cool Exhaust gas recirculation sensor A - circuit low - Mechanical failure - commanded position is not reachable.

Anyone know the likely culprit? Confused

From what you describe, probably a stuck EGR valve. Carbon build up most likely.
Either remove it and clean, quite a difficult job on your own, or you could try one of the many aerosol cleaners for turbos and egr valves.
Instructions say to spray into turbo air intake but it works much better if you spray it into the orifice the MAP sensor fits into on the throttle body. Remember to put the sensor back in before you rev the engine to clear out the carbon. Thumbs Up Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.

AFAIK on the later cars, blanking the EGR completely throughs up a fault. Hence the availability of an EGR plate with a hole. Jules

Hi Arcellius

I have exactly the same issue with the same error codes flagging up. After trying an aerosol cleaner to little effect I have now bought a replacement EGR valve and am halfway through the job of replacing it. Beware that access to the hoses to the EGR and Cooler is extremely restricted and has required a lot of dismantling so far - I will let you know how I get on!

If you end up running it to a garage to have the EGR fitted I would be keen to know what they quote for the job..

Best
Jack

Thanks for the replies, i have started work of getting to the EGR valve.

1. Anyone know the best way to remove the secondary bulkhead? Do you need to work both from the top and below?
2. Do you need to drain the EGR?

Confused

No need to remove the bulkhead at all. All work is done from the top. It takes about an hour to remove the EGR valve assembly. 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. Soon to be sold.

Quick Q? How did you manage without removing the secondary bulkhead?
Im curious how you managed it in an hour and a half. Do you have any tips or a brief description of how you did it?
I want to do this but am seeing comments of how difficult it is Big Cry
Thank you

I don't see how you can manage this without removing the secondary bulkhead.

I have now reached the valve, and using mirror to see the bolts. Looks like its gone be a tight squeeze. Neutral
