"Must have list versus subscription.

Hi, I must ask a question as problems with FL2 appear to be endless. It appears that every owner of FL2 to have in the car, any time, a laptop with manual , a code reader, a multimeter. That's OK. What about the spare parts, can we make a must have emergency list of parts to have in the car when we leave town ? Or is cheaper to have a annually subscription with a tow company and a repair shop? Just asking. Smile

I keep a litre of screen was and a litre of coolant in mine, along with my tow rope coiled on the spare wheel. I've also got a few bulbs, a spare crank sensor and a small socket set under the boot floor.
Anything more serious would be fixed at home, so I have breakdown cover with recovery, included in my insurance. 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. Soon to be sold.
Hyundai Ionic 5 Ultimate on order.

All I carry is a tow rope and a battery jump-start pack, I've only ever used them to help other people out. I also carry my trusty Nanocom and an Autel AP200 just in case.
I always believe that so long as the car is properly maintained and I keep my eyes and ears open to anything unusual going on, I'm in with a pretty good chance of getting to where I set off to.
Having said that, an RAC subscription also provides peace of mind, not that I've ever used it.

You're on a forum dedicated to a specific make of vehicle, it is only normal that issues, problems and faults will be discussed, as will practical advice and assistance on how to resolve many issues.
The same is true for virtually any car you can name, owners discuss problems but for every person on here there will be thousands of owners driving their cars without issues.
The Freelander is a very reliable car using well tested components it is no more likely to break down than others.

Tow rope, adjustable spanner, screwdrivers and jump leads alongside the spare wheel.
A blue tooth ELM 327 dongle and some spare fuses in the glove box.
When we toured with the family caravan I used to carry a lot more tools but those days have passed. Jules

Basically it's a Landrover it can have a variety of niggles but despite various surveys of unreliability it will almost certainly get you home, if the question was asked "has your car broken down" the Freelander 2 will be in the top 5 reliable cars, if it can't get you home then nothing you carry will help unless of course your just in case spares and tools don't allow room for passengers.
A friend of mine who had an original mini carried a spare engine and gearbox in the rear seat, yes he did once change the unit in Coventry using a lamp post to hang the block and tackle from, even the local PC gave him a hand, I don't think you want to go that far Laughing my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

A spanner.
A cheap bluetooth OBD2 reader to clear codes (if I ever need to get out of limp mode) and if I want to look at Torque App for temps, sensors etc if I'm worried something might be off.
Jumper leads (more for other people rather than me).

Like others have said, anything else is what a break down service is for.

Was carrying more tools and a laptop for a bit while I was hunting down specific problems, but thankfully that was short lived!

breakdowns ive attended on freelander 2 in the last 10 years,---- flat faulty batteries,throttle body stuck closed(1),cut out showing nearly half a tank,(top up with diesel car starts,faulty tank transfer pump) 3 of these.and thats all!

Face masks for smoke from bush fires (before Covid was a thing).
Spare air & oil filter.
2 spare wheels (1 is not enough).
Ground sheet if I needed to get down on muddy ground (small tarpaulin).
Spare fuel.
Spare water.
2 fire extinguishers.
Bucket (kitchen sink replacement).
Fridge for beer & refreshments, after repairing flat tyres etc!
