Rear diff or bearings?

Is there away of checking if the rear diff or bearings are making a droning sound?
I've read the stuff on search but can't find a definitive answer. Common sense isn't very common.

It is notoriously difficult for a DIYer.

I have had noises there 3 times and twice it was tyres (First set when the tyres got below 4 mm and the second set had structurally failed and were replaced under warranty). On the other occasion it was the rear diff.

Always, therefore, worth swapping tyres around front to back, or replacing if low, first.

As far as the noise is concerned, tyres tends to increase slowly over time whereas the diff pinion bearing tend to increase rapidly from nothing to a loud 'turbine' whine in 500 to 1,000 miles. FL2 HSE Auto Galway Green

You clearly haven’t looked in the right places then.

Any good motor engineer worth their salt can tell quite easily!

Personally, as far as the Freelander goes I don’t find it easy but anyone with a set of chassis ears will be able to identify which it is instantly (which is why I bought a set). (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. I have the drone at the rear and I'm working up to an exchange 'upgraded' dif.
I'm fairly confident that that is where the problem lies because when I lift my foot off the accelerator (Automatic) the drone goes.
