no fourwheel drive

hi think my 4x4 has stopped working. When i have the engine off but in gear(manual gearbox) I can turn the propshaft,with all four wheels on the ground, is that correct? no faults from the haldex unit and new oil/filter in unit.

The Haldex unit is at the rear, what you describe is no drive from the transfer box, how much can you turn it? my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

If you can turn the propshaft with only slight resistance and all 4 wheels on the ground, then it points to the splines between the gearbox and PTU being stripped. 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. Soon to be sold.

thanks for reply, i can turn it with very little resistance all the way round, I think this happened after mot when they put it on the brake rollers and forgot to set it for 4x4 system and it spun the rear wheels on the concrete, may need a word with the mot station once I have it checked.

I had my car tested only last week, same guy every year. He knows not to put it on the rolling road.

That is why I use a known competent MOT station.

Get down your station and get them to fix it, that's if they agree to liability. ?

Interesting :

I thought the brake rollers did the driving of the wheels rather than the other way round.

What I'd like to know is if the FL2 engine is running with the gearbox is in neutral, and the front wheels are spun up by the brake roller will the system interpret that as "front wheel spin" and engage the haldex causing drive to go through to the rear wheels (just like it does when starting off fast) ?

If the haldex remains disengaged when the gearbox is in neutral then no drive should get through to the rear wheels. If that is the case then I see no problem in using a FL2 on a single axle brake roller - its not permanent 4WD.

You're correct.
And more of that, because for brake testing there is little importance for the direction in which the wheel is spinning, if the test rig knows to spin one side (i.e. left) forward and the other side (i.e. right) backwards, then, even if the haldex (or center differential) is locked, no power is transmitted to the other axle, because the movement is "lost" on that (tested) axle differential.

There is this note in the handbook on page 216

CAUTION

The vehicle should only be towed in a
forward direction with all four wheels on
the ground. Towing in a reverse direction with
two wheels on the ground will result in serious
damage to the transmission.


The vehicle should only be towed for a
maximum of 80 km (50 miles), at a
maximum speed of 80 km/h (50 mph). Towing
for a greater distance, or at a higher speed may
result in serious damage to the transmission.

There is quite a few references on the internet regarding the wisdom of using 2 wheel rolling road testers on 4 wheel drive cars, but I cannot spot an answer from an authoritarian source.

We have MOT testers on this forum, perhaps they will give us the official answer on how to test 4 wheel drive vehicles.

Ahh this explains a few things...
When i bought the car the drivers side Handbrake was completely shot (The shoes actually disintegrated when i took them out for replacement) and yet the car had been MOT'd and passed, so i guess they had used the Tapley meter ?...the pasenger side Handbrake worked just fine
Recently had the car MOT'd and one of the testers came in to check that it was 4x4 and the vehicle was done on the rolling road , i wondered how they could do that with a 4x4 and now i know....

Alex, Badger, (and Steve D) sorry about missing your posts, I was typing my reply when you posted.

I just thought that 'tuneupsteve' might need some reference information if he is to take up repair costs/damage with garage.

You must remember that I come from a time of brakes worked by rods and/or cables, and you set them up by finding a quite bit of road, and examining the skid marks from jamming on the brakes a few times. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
