SD4 engine rattle - 1800rpm

Hi guys,

Boring first post here but I actually have an evoque, but from what I’ve read, the sd4 engine is identical in the FL2.

So I wondered if I may be able to get an opinion from you guys on an annoying rattle..

It’s only there at around 1800rpm in park/neutral & it isn’t present all the time, some times it will do it, other times it won’t. If it’s freezing temperatures, it will not do it, even if driven for 40 mins & well up to temperature, it’s not there. It appears to be coming from the drivers side of the engine. However, if you’re driving it isn’t audible at all, the engine sounds smooth, even crawling past a very close wall, I cannot hear it.

I’ve done 1000 miles since noticing the noise & it hasn’t worsened at all, my LR specialist thought they’d got rid of it & it was a engine trim of some description but the temperatures have risen since then & it’s now back.

I’m getting bored trying to work out whether it’s auxiliary side related or if perhaps it’s more sinister & internal..

Your opinions would be greatly appreciated, so thank you in advance for any opinions.

Here’s a video I took..

It could be:
1. Valve train
2. Timing chain
3. Auxiliary belt tensioner

Remove the aux drive belt & see what it sounds like then. That should narrow your options down a bit. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.
