Freelander 2 models advice

Hi there first post I currently have a 2004 Freelander 1 td4 sport and it has been great to me over the years after some engine mods.

I'm looking at buying a Freelander 2 but getting lost with all the various models and engines is there a list on here explaining them all?


TD4, SD4, SE, HSE, SE, GS, DYNAMIC, DYNAMIC LUX etc

Also which is the most reliable, on the FL1 it was the 2.0 BMW engine TD4

any help would be great thanks

if only the 2.0 i4 petrol had been available on general sale in UK Thumbs Up

to the original poster, depends on what your budget is. Generally the engines are: -

i6 3.2 petrol early model years only

the rest are all 2.2 Diesel:-

TD4 160bhp was available 2006-2010 manual or auto no DPF
TD4 150bhp was available 2010-2014 manual or auto with DPF
SD4 190bhp was available 2011-2014 auto only

specs varied but generally speaking S, GS, XS, SE, HSE up to 2010
from 2010 the SE was dropped and the Sport LE was added
from 2013 there was Black&White, GS, XS, Dynamic, HSE, HSE Lux
from 2014 it was just SE, SE Tech, Dynamic, HSE, HSE Lux/Metropolis

there were some 2wd and stop/start versions with an 'e' added to the model name but they are quite rare.

all the 2.2 are pretty much bomb proof, but rear diff bearings (manufacturer defect of sorts) and Haldex failure (maintenance issue) are the main problems.

ALL FL2's were 5dr body shape basically.

SD4 Auto is the best engine/transmission option. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 76k+ miles) (MY2015)

Hi,
and then just to add a bit more confusion, dont Just rely on the spec level to get the spec you want as many first owners added options from the factory Rolling Eyes

decide what bits you like (heated seats, heated front screen Question ) then look at all specs and see what has been added when new

Thumbs Up .
my first ever FL2 and I did keep it longer than most other cars!
But its now gone way up Norf

The only diesel engine available is the 2.2L PSA/Ford DW12 turbo unit. There are 2 power outputs available. The TD4 having 160BHP, this can have a 6 speed Getrag manual, or 6 speed Aisin automatic.
The SD4 is more powerful at 190BHP, but this is only available with the 6 speed automatic box.

The 4X4 system is very similar to that of the FL1 in operation, although the VCU has been replaced with an electronic drive on demand Haldex unit.

Trim levels get confusing, but as a rule, the S is the lowest spec, moving through the range to the HSE or LUX at the top.
To make matters worse, lower spec vehicles can be "up specced" at the time of ordering, so you'll need to check the vehicle you are looking at, has everything you want.
I went for the SE, simply because it has 90% of everything the HSE gets, but at a lower price. The SE gets heated everything, decent stereo system, sat nav, power fold mirrors, curb, puddle, foot-well lights, sunroof and power 1/2 leather seats.
The HSE gets full leather seats, with memory function, and a slightly better stereo again.

Driving wise, the FL2 is miles ahead of the old FL1, being much more refined and comfortable on the road, and just as capable off road, probably slightly better.

Reliability is an interesting one, and I suspect is very vehicle dependent.
In general it's quite common for the 4X4 system to give trouble, ranging from PTU failure, Haldex failure and most commonly, rear diff failure.

My SE has been particularly troublesome, but it's been worked on by a moron or two in its life, which has been the main issue. For example, the rear diff seized just before Christmas, the reason was obvious when I took it apart. There was no oil in the thing, so unfortunately, even though it was a recent replacement (not by me), it didn't last long because the person who fitted it wasn't very smart.

I think the FL1 2.0L TD4 is more reliable than the 2.2L PSA unit in the FL2. The old BMW sourced unit isn't nearly as needy, but it also isn't anything like as powerful or refined. However as long as the 2.2L unit is maintained correctly, with decent fuel being used, it can do high mileages without too much trouble. 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. Soon to be sold.
