I think specific as it mounts in the starter motor holes. A kit is not dear, mine was £20 including the timing pins and flywheel locking tool. Better quality one seem from memory £60-80. The engine is used in a wide variety of cars, so would expect most garages to have the kit.

You haven’t read the Haynes manual properly in that case! The flywheel locking tool is required so as to be able to slacken/torque the crankshaft pulley bolt.

Thanks, I see it now - LR tool 303-1272 or equivalent.

I was under the understanding that the timing belt was done at 100k miles or ten years ? 2013 FL2 XS.

It was 10 years or 150k miles, but as I understand it, was changed to 7 years after the introduction of the more powerful 190 bhp engine in the SD 4

It was changed to seven years sometime after the SD4. My 2011 SD4 service schedule says 10 years or 150k miles.

But if you go to their next page it says 7 years

https://www.freelanderspecialist.com/freel...diesel-td4

which I believe is the correct change time for post 2012 cars

Interestingly they also recommend the Haldex Unit is services every 2 years (whereas JLR recommends you wait until it breaks then buy a new one) Jules

If you are thinking of keeping the car for more than the next 3 years, why not do it now? You are going g to have to do it anyway, unless you write the car off or your circumstances change. I bought my 2010 plate in August last year with just over 150k on the clock. Changed the belt and ancillary bits at 154k. The belt looked good with no cracking or damage evident. All the bearings in the water pump idlers and tensioner were quiet. They could have already been changed as I bought the car with little history, but I suspect not. At around £140 including the coolant, not an expensive job if you are doing it yourself. My next change will be on age (7 years), as I don't do many miles.

Yes sound advice I was thinking of keeping it long term has it has full history and has never let me down I do most of my own repairs and servicing and I know if looked after these will go on for ever, however at 67 years old I am now getting a bit too inflexible to keep rollling around underneath vehicles I have been spannering motors 50 + yrs so will get the local independant LR specialist to do it. Having said that I was toying with getting an auto but the newest freelander is 7 yrs old and the nearest alternative is either a Evoque or Disco Sport of which both I have heard horror stories of with the new ingenium engine having oil dilution issues and DPF problems no one says anything bad about Freelander 2s So will get it booked in ASAP. 2013 FL2 XS.

So its book in not the cheapest but I trust these people they have a good reputation.

The cost for carrying out the timing belt replacement including water pump is £452.14 including parts, labour, and VAT.

Had the MOT plus A service plus timing belt done yesterday and total bill was £860 on the 3+ scheme at Yeovil LR. (less than the original quote of £1100 !).
MOT no problems at 56k miles, (I had already fitted some new £8 wipers off ebay which work fine) and I was advised to get some new rear tyres as they are getting low. I only did 2,600 miles last year so I will put that off for a month or two. Funny thing is that the tyres went on 30k miles ago and the front have 4.2mm and rear 2.2mm I thought that the FL2 was largely front wheel drive and would therefore wear the front first.

They lent me a 70 reg top spec Ewok for the day which was very nice and loaded with goodies and shows how far behind the FL2 is now compared with current cars. However I met a tractor and trailer and had to reverse the thing and must have looked a complete plonker trying to get it into reverse. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Seems a fair price, might be worth asking for a price to do the Haldex Oil. Filter and pump screen cleaned and consider that as well Question

Thumbs Up .
my first ever FL2 and I did keep it longer than most other cars!
But its now gone way up Norf

Already done that myself pump filter was really bunged up so should be good for another two years, JLR do not include this in their service schedule. 2013 FL2 XS.

That sounds like a good price for a LR 10yr service 👍 was the water pump also changed ? When I enquired the service manager asked me why do I want to change the water pump as it’s normally only the belt they change unless the car has done very high miles.

Yes water pump belt pulleys and antifreeze. labour, parts and VAT probably not a lot of wear in any of it only done 63500 miles and I dont drive it hard but as JLR now say belt should be replaced at seven yrs instead of ten I just dont want to risk a catastrophic engine failier Big Cry for the sake of £452 most of the cost of the water pump is labour so most good garages replace this as it is all stripped down. plus the fact I might sell it in a few months I will get more for it with all the servicing up to date.
