8K budget what would you advise

Hi everyone, with advise taken from my previous post I shall hopefully get myself a SD4 sometime soon.
I don't want to spend anymore than £8000 I am hoping to get something decent for that, having a look around I have seen 2 cars that suit my needs.
Car 1, 2011 61 reg XS model in silver 88000 miles full history and one owner £7999
or
Car 2 2010 60reg XS model in silver 120,000 miles 2 owners with history £6000

Should I spend my whole budget on the dearer one and hope it don't give me any problems for quite sometime so no extra expense or outlay required, or should I spend £6000 on the other car leaving myself some reserve just incase its needed. just wondered what others would do.

Thankyou all in advance

Richard

That's what I would have done too but im in Essex one is somewhere in Kent but the other is in Basingstoke, due to current restrictions its not possible unfortunately. im in no real hurry to get one as I want it for towing my caravan which I also want to update too but cant go anywhere just now anyway. I just fear that when restrictions are lifted everyone will be wanting to upgrade and possibly may inflate prices too

with just the information you have given i would go for the one with full service history especially if it is main dealer. Common sense isn't very common.

8k for a 10 or 11 year old vehicle. Big Cry
I'm so glad I went for my 58 plate SE with a misfire and noisy diff. Ok it's taken some sorting, but I've ended up with a nice looking, 120k mile SE on the road for under £3k. Very Happy 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. My daily driver.
Gone. 2006 Tonga Green i6 HSE.

You are still looking at an 8 - 9 year old car. There would not really be any reason why one would be better than the other, other than their condition and how they have been looked after. If you could stretch to a MY2013 model, it is generally accepted that these are better and more reliable. I am guessing that the two you are looking at are from a dealer in which case look carefully at what guarantee they are offering. Otherwise, whichever option you went for, you should make sure that you have £1k to £2k available to fix any issues which may crop up "just in case"

I think that most members of this forum think that FL2's are very reliable if properly maintained and mine has been almost faultless but there are some known issues that can occur, so be prepared

Not trying to put you off here, as I am a huge fan of the car........but just be prepared

Steve

First off ask yourself do I really need a 4x4 I love my FL2 but would I buy another 4x4 or Land Rover the answer would be No simply because I don’t need a 4x4 & for your budget you could get a far lower mileage saloon car.

Very few of us need a 4 x 4 or even a LR,, you buy a car for what you want and what you consider is the best compromise, the FL2 is a very comfortable long range cruiser, it has a set of software that is probably second to none and keeps you safe in a variety of conditions, I bought a Peugeot 3008 2011as an interim car for £3300, being in the middle of covid and just returned from Cyprus and expected to sell in 3 to 6 months, it had a full service record from Peugeot except for the last one with a 9 month MOT, yet having only covered 80 miles from the MOT a rear brake calliper was seized to the point of requiring a new one,.
Had there been a Freely available within a reasonable distance for about 6k and 100k miles I would have probably gone for one, even if older, they are a far better car and drive, service records tend only to say that the filters and engine oil has been changed, and it passed the MOT, checking the MOT records gives a much better indication of how good the servicing and owner care. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis
2012 HSE SD4 In Orkney Grey now gone, best car ever.

Can't advise on which is the better car, but a major factor could be whether the cambelt has been changed or not. They would both need it at those mileages but if say the 120K has had it already, and the 80k hasn't, that could help your decision; for me the cambelt was a £900 cost at 90k miles. That was in Surrey and I know that others have got it done for £500 in Outer Hebrides but I don't live there.

£900 for the timing belt. It's literally 2 hours work, and under £100 for the parts needed.

£900 is a Censored take, and they're laughing all the way to the bank. 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. My daily driver.
