New Engine for the price of an average FL2

just spotted this on eBay.

BRAND NEW 'crate' engine, for what I would say is the average price of a FL2

will anyone actually buy this ? Too expensive ? but if you need/want one - it's available.

It's not new though, as it's clearly been pulled out of a vehicle. It's definitely not a "crate" engine, as it's not in its crate, and is fitted with loads of ancillary, which a crate engine will be missing. It's also 3 or 4 times the price it should be, for a second hand engine. 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. My daily driver.

Well it looks new to me.
It also states that in the discription. Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.

Sellers web site JLR Parts shows engine price is discounted from RRP of £16,437.76

Their USP is selling geniune JLR new 'surplus' parts however this engine has not been stored too well - evidenced by corrosion on crankcase and flywheel

My engine transplant (a reconditioned exchange unit) cost me almost £2.5K less than that one - fully fitted by my indie, with 20,000 mile warranty and most ancillaries also replaced. Labour charges made up a big chunk of that bill.

Even at that cost I seriously considered scrapping the car rather than replacing the engine... Had my only option been the price of that one on fleabay (PLUS labour) I wouldn’t have hesitated to scrap my car immediately.... Lexus RX450H - 500 mile a week commuter- I just couldn’t trust in a newer RRS or DS for that….
2009 Freelander 2 HSE... 155K miles, we’ve done 135k of those, has done brilliantly on the commute and staying firmly put as car two in the household
2002 Jaguar XK8 Coupe... fun, fast, ours for 12 years and owes us nothing - so staying with us too…

Umm I had 90,000 service, the cambelt changed, Haldex serviced and front brake pads for £780. Whistle MY 2013 SD GS Auto

Can't comment on the engine in question, and partly o/t, but 11 years ago we were faced with the choice of selling (cheaply) our beloved 33ft 1982 twin diesel cruiser and buying a more modern equivalent at way north of £130k, or having her re-engined (or giving up boating, of course!). The original engines were clapped-out old 2.5 litre Leyland taxi engines. Crude, noisy and very unreliable.
Two new 2.2litre, four cylinder diesel engines (sound familiar?) plus gearboxes and drive shafts were quoted at £25k all in. We went for that as the rest of the boat is in great shape, and now have a completely transformed boat Thumbs Up.
The engines are c50HP Nanni's - normally aspirated and marinised Kubota units - so rather less sophisticated than our FL2 kit, and were £8k each in 2009 - which gives some sort of yardstick pricing comparison, I suppose.
As always in these 'heart vs head' situations, it's gonna cost you! If we'd spent the £100k+ nett to get a modern boat, the depreciation by now would be way over the re-engine route cost - and loving the old boat as we did (do) we couldn't bring ourselves go that way. In any event, modern boats tend to be rather flimsy and lightweight both to save cost and give better fuel economy and performance. Ours weighs about 8 tonnes vs a modern equivalent at 3 or 4 and that gives a great deal of stability in windy conditions and very predictable handling.
As with a car, we could have hunted out a 'newer' old boat for the re-engine costs but by now we'd probably be back to square one with knackered engines etc. I'd estimate that we've lost two thirds of the re-engine cost in terms of our boat value but we've really enjoyed those 10 years and the engines at <800 hrs (about 20k miles in car terms) are still as new and we're very glad we kept her.
Sorry - a rather long-winded way of saying that the FL2 engine advertised seems to me more-or-less right. I'd love two FL2 units in my boat!!

Hopefully we'll be able to use her a lot more this year than last.....

All the best I've decided to stop being a good example and will now just be a terrible warning.....

Marine engines are about twice the price of a car engine especially if it is indirectly cooled, directly cooled engines tend to have shorter lives due to salt water destroying parts of the engines mainly because they stand idle with the salt drying out in the water jackets as the water drains to waterline level, when wintering unless you spend time doing it yourself the average marine mechanic will never flush out the engine correctly especially in England when fresh water is metered and cost is high running a hose for over an hour. Indirectly cooled still has its problems as salt or river water containing lime or calcium runs past the heat exchanger and is discharged via the manifold and exhaust overboard. Generally pleasure craft marine engines last half the time of of vehicle engines due to poor maintenance and are basically marinised vehicle engines or plant and static engines containing alloys not suitable for the marine enviroment.
The marine industry still treat customers as cash cows very similar to high end car dealers making it extremely plain if you can't afford their prices you shouldn't have bought one.
In the case of this LR engine it may well be £16k is the list price but I doubt if they are ever sold at that price and the cost price is about £3k including VAT, the cost to a customer is 4 to 5 times the cast price, but could be heavily discounted should the supplier order from LR in bulk but very few indies will order over 100 units and main dealers won't discount that high unless LR does their famous factory assistance.
It is a long time since I rebuilt an engine and have no idea the cost of pistons and bearings but I think you would be able to buy most parts including a warranted turbo for around £2k with rebore and regrind crank. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

actually, for a new diesel engine that’s not a bad price.
In NA, the vehicles only came with the petrol version... that would be a pleasant upgrade in my mind.
