The FL2 Built-in Sat Nav differs from Free-Standing Sat Navs.
If you lose the GPS signal the FL2 will attempt to Inertial-Navigate by using the FL2s Speed and Accelerometer Sensors.
Although most modern Free-Standing Sat Navs have superior traffic and other info by linking to your mobile phone. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

2008 SE 3.2

Note: mine has all of the optional packages

For the US the later years had nicer seats but other than that the HSE wouldn't have gotten me anything beyond what I already have.

The HSE would be missing the most important feature

The LR satnav dead reckons on loss of satellite signal, inertial navigation requires the use of 3 gyros, but there again I'm being a bit pernickety Laughing my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Dartman - Yes you are correct it is Old Fashioned Dead Reckoning. I just thought that it may be worthwhile pointing out what a good Built-In System can do in areas of poor reception.

As I understand it, the FL2 uses ground track speed, and direction, from its last known position to estimate its present position, if it looses GPS signal.

From the FL2 Manual
The navigation computer contains a solid state piezo gyro which measures the motion of the vehicle around its vertical
axis. The gyro operates on the principle known as the Coriolis force. The Coriolis force is the force that appears to
accelerate a body moving away from its rotational axis against the direction of rotation of the axis.

To calculate the vehicle's current position, direction and speed, the navigation computer uses:
speed signals transmitted on the high-speed CAN from the ABS module to the MOST ring,
and signals transmitted from the GPS antenna and the gyro sensor.

I do not know if it uses any of the accelerometer info which is available from the FL2 Sensor Cluster.

The sensor cluster is installed beneath the center console and is secured to the transmission tunnel with 2 studs and nuts.
The sensor cluster is a compact unit that provides the ABS module with inputs of yaw rate, roll rate, longitudinal and
lateral acceleration. The ABS module broadcasts the input values on the high speed CAN bus for use by other systems.

The FL2 is quite a complicated integrated system.

PS We used this Dead Reckoning principle in my early days of avionics, before GPS or Digital Computers.

Thanks to everybody and all the comments.
Learning about FL2,s all the time.
SE and HSE would seem to be the best trim? Finishes.
Not ready yet to get rid of my Disco2 but when it has to go I will definitely gat an FL2
Thank you again to all.

I'd go back and have a proper look at the brochures in the Dropbox link that Ianmetro posted, to be honest.

Trim levels changed throughout the FL2's life - for example, an early SE and a post-2012 facelift SE are pretty different (and after 2012 there was SE Tech in addition to SE).

As others have said, some GS models - nominally only one trim level up from base S spec - are actually very well equipped, often with full leather interiors and plenty of other extras, apart from satnav, which to some is not a deal breaker anyway.

Whatever inputs it uses it certainly puts you in the correct lane exiting the Paris tunnels on the ring road, whether it is worth £1500 is your choice, Garmin and TomTom would certainly cause the cost of built in units to reduce if they had a can-bus input option. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Yes, MY13 & onwards are a different beast.
