spare wheel

if i,m running 20"wheels on my motor but i can only get hold of a 18" spare.What if any damage could it do a i know they like runnng on the same wheels and tyres ???.TIA

I would only be running on the 18" if i got a puncture and be able to get it fixed

Depends on the rolling circumference. What size tyres are you running on the 20 inch rims?

If you're running, say, 275/40 on the 20s and your 18" spare has a 235/60 tyre, then the rolling circumference is the same and it shouldn't cause problems, though I still wouldn't do it for an extended journey.

If it is 235/50R20 vs 235/60R18, the 18 is sbout 5mm less in diameter. So keep it well inflated. It's better than a biscuit! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

DO NOT BUY A CAR WITHOUT A SPARE,i am in roadside rescue and one particular vehicle has been off road for 4 days as we cant get a wheel till tuesday.(old ones damaged)

As most of you, I reserve the spare for temporary use only.
Besides, my winter rims are the 17s. My summer’s, the 18s. I’m not wasting good money on 2 spares. Guy Pensa

Hi,
if your going to use a Spare wheel that does not match your existing wheel pattern then its not the wheels diameter that matters

as mattmjones and lightwater mention, its the wheel n tyre Radius/diameter/circumference that counts

a 235x50x20 = 235x55x19 = 235x60x18 = 235x65x17 (+or- 2mm) and any of them will make a good spare wheel

that in theory you could leave on, as the FL2 does not have the tech for the suspension ect to know it is a different wheel/tyre size combination
abs and traction control may not be happy if your hhhooooning it around as a larger diameter wheel (20") should give less wheel spin the smaller ones (17") but a bit a sensible driving until you get your original tyre sorted/repaired/replaced

my spare wheel is the same pattern so it gets rotated with the others on the car, just fitted a new tyre to match the new tyre on what was the spare and now the worse of the other 3 is the new spare

my first ever FL2 and I did keep it longer than most other cars!
But its now gone way up Norf

Temporary spares are only good to 60 kph, for 50 or so km. I highly doubt in these circumstances I’ll be needing any of the advanced driving management technology. Any more than that, LR roadside assistance can come and deal with it. Guy Pensa

& if you have to use a biscuit at least put it on the rear & move a good rear tyre to the front if the front was a flat. Near side front is the most likely to get a flat. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Temporary spares have two limiting factors - they have to be run at 60psi due to their reduced section and will not like higher speeds as this induces heat and therefore pressure, secondly they are steel - the wheel bolts are profiled for alloys, steel wheels need differently profiled wheel bolts. So reduced speed due to pressure and limited distance to prevent bolt damage.

I thought that the wheel wells in all FL2 were the same, and would accommodate a full sized spare (our HSE did) - at which point why would anyone buy a temporary spare? Second hand FL2 wheels complete with serviceable tyre are cheap enough on eBay.

Some of us who have moved to the dark side (DS) are stuck with a wheel well that will only fit a skinny spare, still better than a tube of glue when you are 100 miles from home with a caravan on the hook - but hilarious when the boot (back seats down) is full to the roof of camping stuff and an inflatable dinghy and it all has to come out in the pouring rain.
