Loss of power

I have a 2009 Freelander 2 diesel that I bought some time ago with a few issues so been working through them slowly and had the car on sorn not used it at all for months
I gave it a run recently and it started fine but shortly after setting off it lost power, still running but wouldn’t accelerate just trundled along smoothly but with no power at all really
Nothing shows as an error on the dash And no error codes registered in the memory when I scan it
Its done this twice now And if I stop, turn off the ignition and start off again its fine
Could it be a sticking turbo or something thats the result of the car standing for sp long not being run ?
Any advice would be appreciated
I would add The work I have done has been shockers, drop links, brakes, rear door latch battery drain issue but nothing engine related except giving it an oil service

If the diesel filter gets blocked it can give similar symptoms.

Lots of info on the site regarding problems people have had with non genuine fuel filters. The filter has a bypass valve in it which directs excess fuel back to the tank. On cheaper pattern filters this can stick causing the fuel to get excessively hot. The ecu then limits power to avoid engine damage. I would replace the filter with a genuine Landrover (or Purflux) filter as a starting point to cure the issue. Good luck! Thumbs Up

Before you do anything change the filter to a genuine LR fuel filter.

I bought a genuine LR filter and changed it but no different
Just ran it up the road for half an hour its lacking power, slow acceleration and can just achieve about 60mph
No warnings on the dash it isnt missing hesitating or spluttering just lacks power feels like the engine is too small for the car.
When you rev the engine at stop it feels fine
What should be my next check ?

I'm assuming you've checked the intercooler hoses?
Especially the one below the throttle body for splits / holes??
Very common fault.

Hi bobcr
I have had a similar issue for some time as I haven't been using the car much since the original lockdown in March an when I have used it was just short journeys. No place to go. Anyway my issue is the sticky turbo. car runs fine until you hit an incline then loss of power. Tried many things to clean it without success.
Purchased an endoscope to look inside turbo. Removed exhaust to look inside and could see behind turbine wheel full of soot. Purchased a three part cleaner from my local motor factors to try and clean again. Automotive Brands, Diesel Turbo Cleaning Kit. Comprises of one aerosol of cleaning solution, to be sprayed directly into turbo, one aerosol of neutraliser and one bottle of solution to be poured into fuel filter.
Cleaning solution fantastic, flushed out loads of crap.
All put back together and car appears to work ok.
Still have the issue of no place to go.
Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.
