Track Rods and Track Rod Ends

Due to an advisory on my last MOT I’ve just had, first of all the RHS Track Rod End changed, then due to there still being some play, the RHS Track Rod itself changed. Steve, the LR indie that I use, was concerned as the new Track Rod had a shorter threaded section for the Track Rod End to screw on to, leaving very little adjustment for toe angle. He checked with Land Rover (parts were genuine) that the correct parts were supplied which they assured him that they were. So now, if I fall foul of Bristol City Council’s approach to traffic calming, (there are some roads around here where we can’t use my wife’s ST3 due to the state of them) and put the toe angle out of spec, I might not be able to correct it again. Any ideas welcomed?

Make you wonder if it's a Chinese copy. A few years ago I had a problem with a sensor on my FL2 and it went to the dealer. They called me to say that there would be a delay as the replacement had arrived but it was clearly the wrong item even though it had the correct part number on the box. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Was the track rod itself shorter or just the threaded section at the end of it? Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

As your car is a 2007 is it possible the TRE had been changed previously and was a pattern part which had a longer threaded part then the genuine part. A photo of the part in question would help identify if there is anything to worry about or not. Thumbs Up

Dondiddy, as I’ve owned the car for 9 of it’s 12 years and this was the first time I’ve had a track rod or TRE changed I think I’m fairly safe in saying that the parts were original and my mechanic changed them for genuine parts.

SteveD, from what the mechanic said, there was less thread on a track rod of the same length.

The TRE was fitted to the original track rod and the steering was acceptable with no signs of odd wear. It was only when the replacement track rod was fitted that the anomaly showed up. Steve my mechanic was not happy that he’d lined up the steering correctly and recommended getting it checked, and here we are.

I would have expected at least 2-3 threads still showing behind the locknut to allow for any further adjustment. It would appear that the new part is incorrect despite what the dealer says. I have had previous experience of parts being wrongly labelled or miss identified,(not LR)so it can happen. Do you know the part number of the part that was supplied?

Track rod end - LR002609, Track rod - LR016869 are the parts that have been invoiced for and these numbers agree with part numbers on the Advanced Factors website.

Seems like a manufacturing fault - not enough thread has been cut on the end of the track rod maybe? Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

From what I could find the thread should be 68mm in length.
