2008 3.2L short inline 6, Denso 5344 vs. NGK 6619 Iridium:

Anyone used both before? If so, does anyone have a preference?
Gap to 0.30 or not?

Motion inc.

Note: most of Freel2 owners have Diesel power


I recommend using the Denso Iridium Spark Plugs


Note: I change the spark-plugs every 50,000 miles

Any of these will work well

Don't adjust the Gap run them with the factory gap

3421 - Stock Iridium plug

5344 - Iridium power (I've been running these)

3459 - SIP Iridium (This is what Volvo used for the last of the 3.2s)

4704 - Iridium TT (Similar to SIP but less expensive, I will switch to these next)

Excellent info as usual Paul! Thank you........I always forget to check the Volvo forums and, of course, they have more models with the 3.2L short inline six.

I'll have a look at the Denso 4704s

I've got some bad news for you.

If you like you can use the thickness of your cigarette box to set the spark plug gap.

But you will need to hold on to those cigarettes for 5 years or so until it is time to change spark plugs again.

And since your going five years on a single pack of cigarettes it seems that a set of feeler gauges would be the better choice.

Unless you are trying to quit smoking, in that case your plan seems fine.

Paul, gave up smoking about 50 years ago so no longer smell like a bonfire. Like to say I've saved a fortune but other vices have taken over. I've still got a set of feeler gauges in the garage but no longer used also a load of shims for adjusting clearances on my Lotus Cotina twin cam. 11 GS Bali Blue

6 Denso Iridium TT 4704s going in tomorrow replacing the same manufacturer's Platinum TT plugs, used for 55,000 kms without issue. I did re-gap the platinums to .30 but I am leaving the Iridiums with the manufacturer's stock gap of .40. Will update this thread for p_gill as these plugs were his idea.

Since I am somewhat OCD, Whistle Very Happy Embarassed , I intentionally did not compare or check the 4704 stock gaps because if one was even slightly different from the rest I would be compelled to correct this! Thumbs Up Rolling with laughter

It seems strange, but by modern standards these cars of yesteryear seem quite slow.

A FL2 SD4 Auto would leave either the Lotus Cortina Mk1 or Mk2 way behind.

I am still running Denso Iridium Power.

For my next change I will switch to the 4704 TT

I know a LR2 owner in Texas with over 200,000 mile that’s running the 4704 and he is happy with them

Let us know if you notice any difference as compared to the platinum plugs

Update; I did the motor oil $& filter, the diff re & re and attempted the PTU oil change without success, could not get the flex hose in for "beans". Anywho, the 4704 Densos are nice!. Acceleration "seems"smoother & more consistent through out to full range Now, I had gapped the Platinum TTs to 0.30 but left the Iridium TTs with stock gaps, 0.40. If I was to use my butt dino analysis, the Platinum TTs seemed not as consistent through the entire range but in all honesty, I can't tell if the difference has anything to do with the plugs or the gap. Either way, I ain't touching the spark plugs for a while. I'd sure recommend both models for this engine. Thanks again for the tip Paul.

@p_gill Yes!!!! Will be drilling it sometime in the next three weeks when I proactively replace front struts (nothing wrong with the originals currently other than age) with Bilsteins. I did the back struts with Billys a few weeks ago before the recon diff arrived and my OCD bothers my until I do the fronts as well.....crazy but localized reality Rolling with laughter . BTW, doing the back struts made the re & re of the rear diff a bit easier.

To the thread topic that I sidelined Rolling with laughter : I have driven the vehicle a few times since the plugs were changed to the Denso 4704s Iridium TTs and I really like them over the Platinum TTs. They are more responsive and consistent through the entire power band, I'd like to say more power but that's subjective without putting the LR2 on a dyno. I would highly recommend them, worth the extra cost to me.

UPDATE:4704s
These are excellent plugs for the I6 3.2L Volvo engine; highly recommend! Consistent power/response right through the full torque/horsepower range. What's shocking, this is also in combination with mid-grade gasoline (Shell of course).
