Auto Gearbox Oil Change - Questions

Hi All

I've recently completed an Automatic Gearbox oil change on my Freelander 2 - 2010. I followed the instructions on https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic28619.html.

Before I found these instructions, I found a fill plug under the passenger side wheel arch which looked like it was part of the gearbox. I think this is the fill point for manual transmissions. The latter instructions I found showed the fill plug to be on top of the gearbox. Have I made a mistake which could cause damage or is this an additional fill point?

I've successfully filled the gearbox with new ATF fluid - as per the instructions - using the integrated level plug. What I don't understand is why about 1 Ltr of fluid came out when I initially removed the level plug. Was it over-filled by someone last time?

Help would be much appreciated!

Cheers

Chris

Level plug first inner one, Drain plug second outer one?

1 litre out from just the inner fill level plug sounds like an overfill from previous fluid change, but a whole litre is a lot of overfill! How much did you get out total?

Filling from the top is good.

What fluid did you use out of interest.

Thanks! I'll have to come back on the exact ATF oil.

Do you know what the plug under the passenger side wheel arch is? I started filling that one and then stopped - it looks like it's part of the gearbox. You can just see it at full lock. I'm concerned I've put some ATF fluid in the wrong hole.

Was the engine running when you opened the drain plug,?

It is perfectly normal for fluid to come out of the small inner level plug. The correct level is set using this with the engine running. When it's not running the oil level in the gearbox 'sump' rises. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Is the other plug a hex head? Think it might be the coolant drain plug. Mine was stuck fast when I tried to drain the coolant.

Thanks - really helpful. I think I need to take some pictures of the "other plug". I did not fill the correct plug with the engine running - so I will do this ASAP.

The plug I'm not sure about is a hex plug under the passenger side wheel arch and its on the side of the gear box.

I'll take a picture when I'm home from work. I don't think it's any of these - luckily. Shocked

Hi Guys

I've found a picture online of the gearbox and circled the plug location I'm talking about.

I'm concerned I've really stuffed-up by putting a small amount ATF in here.
