Sir Tom Moore

Fantastic news. Can there be a more deserving recipient than a war veteran who then raised all that money for the NHS at 100 years old?

Sorry, but not sure this is right. A phenomenal amount of money was raised but it was from the general public - he didn’t walk any farther to raise the extra over his target
Mind you they dish awards out to footballers, and really don’t see how they merit anything for being very well paid for participating in their favoured pastime. What do they actually provide? Anyone truly missed them for past few months?

Not walking further is irrelevant for me. He did it at 99 turning 100 and with such great spirit which puts the snowflakes of today in the shade.

The fact he fought in World War II is enough for me in any case. Every single war veteran deserves it more than sports stars who routinely get them.

I've been listening to a 30 part audio book on the war which was absolutely fascinating and I have learnt many new facts. Listening to the horrors of the war really brings it home. Captain now Colonel now Sir Tom, is beyond question for me. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Hopefully said footballers don't actually get honours for playing football, but for their community work, which an awful lot seem to do these days. Why not Sir Tom? even if it was originally a family joke about raising a thousand pounds for charity, it was the act of raising the money and the way that it was done that merits the honour rather than the fantastic amount that the public donated.

I am sure there are others more deserving, who put their lives at risk on a daily basis who also deserve recognition, but that shouldn't take away from Sir Tom the efforts he has made both during the war and during this crisis. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

ill agree with all the pro Colonel Sir Tom Moore comments above and just add that it wasn't only the fact he walked all that distance at 99 years old, but that his mere actions in doing so inspired the whole nation during a time of severe crisis and made many bow down in respect to his achievements.

I would just like to say that he is a thoroughly nice bloke with a fantastic attitude to life and is a good role model in these difficult times.

That's what I like about this forum - its members and their tolerance.
Sidthecat (sure its not his real name) has a view, it might not be a commonly held view, but one he is entitled to. no-one has berated him (Her?) for that view. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

RogB, he's only an honoury Colonel, he is a retired Captain, the government could have made him a retired Colonel but his pension would have put him in the 40% tax bracket, he is a hundred and it wouldn't have cost that much. I've always wondered about retired ranks, army uses from captain which today is quite a low rank, RN from Lt Cdr but normally Commander, and RAF from Sqd Ldr, think the army is something to do with the Guards where the rich and high born use it to serve some sort of apprenticeship for a job in the higher echelons of the city. Traditionally only the field officer rank of Major and above (and Air Force and Navy equivalents) have used their military rank in retirement. To use a rank below that was considered bad form. Mark Phillips changed that by insisting on being called Captain Mark Phillips, otherwise he'd be just plain old Mr Phillips, which he is. driving on the right side

I think the knighthood is a bit OTT, but these are not normal times so rules can be bent.
as said he deserves respect for being a true veteran, even before his recent deeds At work
