Connection on battery positive?

Hi,
I am asking on behalf of a friend. What is the function of the connection on the battery positive terminal as indicated in the photograph? The car is a MY2012 SD4 SE in South Africa. Her car indicated reduced performance, lost power and died. Battery is flat. She discovered this fitting was not connected to the battery positive terminal any more.
Thanks in advance - hope somebody can give information on this.

If you unplug it the stop start function stops working.
I found this out by accident after changing the battery over.
Doesn't appear to have any other adverse issues. I think this is where the ecu takes the battery condition from and then determines if there is enough charge to operate the stop start function.

That is my interpretation but I stand to be corrected if someone knows different. Thumbs Up Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.

Thank you Gasman,
I have also read about the Intelligent Power System Management (IPSM) that does what you describe where it starts shutting down certain functions one after the other when a low battery condition is picked up. Also managing alternator charge when the car is in the over-run aka regeneration.

My research brought up the same, but in this case the car does not have the stop-start function. This is what is confusing.
I was hoping that if this gadget comes loose from the battery positive terminal it will stop charging and thus explains what happened.

Thanks for your reply.
