London's not an issue for me, but access to central Glasgow would now get me a fine - £60 for first offence, £120 for second, £240 for third and £480 for fourth or more!

However, I have just discovered that my old 200Tdi Defender will become a "Historic Vehicle" from late August when it reaches its 30th birthday, so if I get it MOT'd, I can belch my way through the Scottish LEZs without a care in the world!  2005 D3 2.7 Auto

None of my Land Rovers are ULEZ compliant, now retired do not drive anywhere much, certainly not into London so not an issue for me, but a neighbour who is a nurse who works shifts at a London Hospital is going to be seriously impacted by it.

Worms, I,m with you. Do not intend ever to go to Central Glasgow. The fines imposed by Glasgow Council far,far exceed any other LEZ in the UK. Pure money making exercise.

As I have said before, this is not just about London.

I can no longer drive through Bristol without financial loss, so getting rid of the capital's mayor will make no difference as it is a national problem.

Only effective leadership from the government will help solve the problem. I feel that we need a costed plan from the lawmakers on how we are going to cut pollution, instead we get meaningless statements, and blaming of the local governments.

Unfortunately solving this will need additional general taxation on us all, and that will not be popular.

I read this morning that the 'promised 2030' national charging network is progressing, but at it's present rate of roll out will take until 2040, therefore 10 years to late for the fossil fuel sales shut off.

As an example of the lack of government guidance,, if I am to change my perfectly good FL2 I need to know the actual rules on PHEVs and EVs that will take effect in 2030 and 2035. (and perhaps some recognition (grant?) that I am being forced to sale a good, serviceable, car) FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

As I don't venture into cities with ULEZ in my TD4 so it won't make a jot of difference to me. We do visit London on occasion, but always park well away from London, and take the train in.

The I6 is ULEZ compliant, so I could use that if I was desperate to drive into the zone, however the increased fuel cost makes that a pointless exercise, compared to simply paying the daily charge on my TD4.

I'm selling my I6 this month, which just might be bought by someone wanting to dodge the daily charge. 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. Soon to be sold.

If it wasn't for the fact that our car is registered "Disabled" because of my Wife's illnesses then ours would be for sale. As it stands it has an exemption until 25th October 2027. As of end of August he TD4 which my Son keeps and uses won't be able to cross Hampton Court bridge without paying which he lives less than a mile from  2007 TD4 XS The work horse that earns its up keep

The only good thing about London’s ULEZ is that you can register your vehicle and pay automatically if you stray into it.
The LEZ in Bristol, and I believe in other such blighted communities, don’t have this set up because the government haven’t given them the funds to do this and local authorities are not allowed to spend any of the LEZ charges on this. So, if your car isn’t compliant and you don’t realise (I know, they should have been paying attention but have you seen how confusing some of the signage is!) you’ve entered the LEZ, even for the shortest of moments, the next you’ll know about it is a notice to pay a £60 fine for non payment of a LEZ charge. Some residents have built up fines in the thousands of pounds due to daily commuting.
Cynically, there is an entrance to Bristol’s Cabot Circus shopping mall that doesn’t incur the charge but come out of the wrong exit and you’ll pay.
I’m afraid that with tin worm starting to rear itself, 15 year old suspension that could do with rebuilding and renewing, another cam belt change looming along with all the other things that begin to wear out I’ve gone over to the dark side and bought an L551 Evoque.

Is the term "historic vehicle" applied differently to ULEZs ?

For the MOT and VED, a "historic vehicle " is 40 years from 1st registration.

Selling a perfectly good car because of ULEZ and buying a compliant car depends on how often do you have to enter the zone or drive in the zone, if you do, how many years?
Do a quick calculation of the cost until you move house and it's not a problem, or your life expectancy, against that of purchasing a compliant car, that really means a BEV because any other car will be hit, compliant or not now, it certainly won't be in five years, then they will also hit you with a congestion charge as well as ULEZ.
Spain doesn't have these charges yet and though Paris has them I don't think the French will accept them country wide without riots, but these are considerably larger countries than the UK with similar populations my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

France has a crit air sticker system. All vehicles have to display this in the windscreen. It also applies to tourist vehicles. The "level" of sticker you are allocated related to the level of pollution the vehicle emits. My 2010 TD4 is a level 3. Levels go from 5 ( worst ) to (I think ) 1 ( best ). Cities already using the system include Paris, Lyon, Grenoble and Strasbourg, though is constantly expanding. The ability to enter these cities depends on your crit air designation. The limits are being reduced over a period of years. All very complicated ( typically French ).
