Thermal imaging camera for car diagnostics

Last year my son asked me to research an instrument for measuring and recording light intensity on farmers' crops and I ended up buying an item from this outfit FLIR. They now send me emails on various instruments which might be of interest and today I received this which whilst way out of the price range for an individual driver is an interesting development. Watch the video.

They do this as an add-on for smartphones much cheaper - about £300. I was looking at getting one for fault finding in my electronics day job.

The IR resolution is only 160x120

There is another company called Seek Thermal who do a higher resolution one for a similar price, but it doesn't have the visible camera overlay that the Flir one does. However the Flir one has a rechargeable battery rather than using the phone battery which seems an unnecessary complication.

I have been using FLIR cameras for years for electrical diagnosis and are absolutely brilliant.
They are great for battery drains, I leave a vehicle parked overnight with interior light disconnected and in the morning run through vehicle with thermal camera, when i find a hot-spot its normally the cause of the battery drain.
Fantastic for bad earths as well. I have also used for car radios that don't switch off although the LCD screens shut down.

I actually tested loads of thermal cameras over a 4 day period with a team of guys and the FLIR was by far the best.
Some at twice the price were useless. I have also tried the phone APPs but find them useless as well for minor temperature fluctuations.

I do have some great screen pics of it in action but my photobucket account is full so been unable to share. I have even tried deleting loads of pics but now they want money Jaguar x-type sport gone
