Rear fogs are a legal requirement in the EU/UK, fronts are not so can be optional.

Well only ONE rear fog lamp is the requirement and it has to be on the off-side.
Many manufactures 'balance' the rear lamp cluster, and some don't fit bulbs, some don't fit the link wire. Some have Reverse on N/S and Fog on O/S

I have converted many vehicles to have BOTH fog lamps working on the rear.
.

True....and it doesn’t HAVE to be on the off side (or drivers side EU/UK) it can also be centrally mounted. Regards

Fogs and dipped beam, the fogs really fill in the road edge, works quite well actually, try it when no ones about Laughing my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

I cannot remember the last time I drove in fog thick enough that fog lights worked better than decent dipped beams.

Driving in, North Norfolk, on Censored roads where you can't see where the road ends and the scenery begins, I find the fog lights very useful.

I too find that the front fog lights are handy to fill in the area immediately in front and to the edges of the road in front.
This is very useful on the narrow(ish), dark, country roads around here.
On the main roads they are not necessary as the increased speed needs normal main and dipped beams.

I fear this discussion is going to spill into the use of Rear High Intensity Lights, so to save time here is one we had earlier.

Only usually found at, Bacton Gas works and armed, not interested in motoring offences as will noticed by the number of cars in the area with at least one light not working.

I live rural; everytime I drive at night, I use my fogs and low beams or, when there is no oncoming traffic, my high beams. In the warmer months, the high beams can give you an advantage on critter/etc eyes, looking to cross the roads.......

We drive in north Norfolk......well almost North (we don’t venture near Holt or Fakenham because they don’t like us leaving muddy tyre tracks on the roads there) a good few times a year visiting the farm, the roads are fine just steer the other way when you feel the front wheels wobbling Rolling with laughter Regards

I must be spoilt by my wibbly wobbly headlamps then, I would never buy a car without HiDs or LED headlamps anymore, last time we test drove a new car the salesman seemed confused when I said we wanted to test drive at night to check the headlamp performance! Regards

Totally agree with this! With previous vehicles, I’ve always found that the fogs give that low-level, wide beam that reflects off the stag’s eyes when he is just off the road and looks up in response to the vehicle noise. Sadly my fogs have never worked on the FL2 (I think it is a relay issue) with expensive results... Big Cry https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic31019.html 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

Hi Chris, Does your, Freelander have keyless entry, or is it pre, October?

Hi there. The car is pre-october 2012 I think (62 plate) with only keyless ignition - no keyless entry. No front fogs, no auto lights and no front fog or auto option on the left hand stalk - just dipped, main and full with rear fogs on the twist.

Seeing as the upgraded stalk (the one we don't have) seems to come with both the auto and front fog twist option at the same time I'm wondering if the 2 came as a bundle. And as such if replacing the stalk with the better one (and maybe some coding) will fire up the auto lights sensor. Not overly fussed about front fogs although if those are also simple enough to retrofit I'd consider it if the looms are there behind the front bumper.
