Front Suspension - 'bobbling' noise

All

I have a noise coming from the right hand front suspension (RHD 2012 FL2 HSE TD4) - and the best way I can describe the sound is it sounds like a hollow plastic ball rattling in a plastic lunchbox! Hollow!

It only happens on compression, not on lock to lock (so it's not a sideways issue). It can 'bobble' away on the lightest of bumpy tarmac.

A colleague and I today lifted the bonnet and basically bounced the car and it sounds as if it is coming from the top of the suspension strut where it connects to the body. I have ordered some new drop links (cheap and easy) and will get the pry bar out on the various bushes (wishbone etc), but my mechanic (it's just had an MOT) says everything is tight.

The big question - is there some form of bearing/spacer/pad at the head of the strut where it bolts to the body? My first thought is that, if it's not the drop link, its something there. Happy to wade in with the spanners.

Is there an exploded diagram available on the web that someone can direct me to?

Thanks
