What's my noise???

Ok. Over the years I've been on here I've read loads of "noise" threads. Diffs, wheel bearings etc etc. Whines, drones etc.

But I'm struggling to translate all that into what I'm experiencing.

Initially I thought the issue was the rear diff. Basically above 30mph I get a drone/whine/jet engine type noise that increases with speed and sounds like an engine beginning to wind down as I slow.

I had initially though the noise went when I dipped the clutch but I did some careful testing today and found the following:

1. Sound increases with speed
2. I can't seem to find any difference between load/speed sounds. I am assuming while accelerating, it's under greater load but speed is also increasing, so sound changes. Sound then stays at whatever level I keep speed at.
3. Doesn't change as I go round corners
4. At 40mph downhill, I dipped the clutch so it freewheeled and the sound DIDNT go away. I don't know if that rules out the diff.
5. It is definitely at the back.

I haven't been able to get it up on a Jack and try and wobble the wheels but that's my next job.

Do the symptoms point to one thing more than another? Learned to drive in 2011.

All you have to do is find a mechanic with a set of chassis ears, the suspect bearing (if that's what it is) will be diagnosed within moments.

True, Nick, but I like to try and get so far myself first as I am entirely reliant on my car day in day out so often struggle to get that sort of thing done. Learned to drive in 2011.

Likewise but there is a limit to this sort of thing, which is why I bought a set of second hand ones! (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

be careful about statements like "it's definitely at the back", noises do travel.

I was convinced the diff was dying, turned out it was the small gearbox at the front (IRD?). Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

The latest way that MOT testers are being taught to check wheel bearings is, Jack up the wheel then with one hand gripping a coil of the spring spin the wheel. Any wear in the bearing is felt as a rough vibration through the spring. Worth a try ??
