Radiator Fans Assembly Removal.

Having changed my glowplugs 2 years ago by removing the inlet manifold I noticed a slight reluctance to start during the last cold weather - never failed to start. Than having read the recent threads on glowplugs Alex mentioned that there were 2 types of glowplugs fitted so I checked the boxes of the ones I fitted and sure enough I fitted the 5volt ones not the 11volt ones so I am assuming the 5volt ones burnt out pretty quickly. So the recent thread mention removing the fan assembly which I have attempted twice now to no avail.

I removed the bonnet sensors so that the fans didn't need to go too far backwards. I removed the plastic clip that holds the top radiator hose. I unplugged and unclipped the fan electric cable and pushed out of the way and similarly the bonnet release cable.

I can slide the fan assembly out of the 4 clips but then I become stuck. The bottom passenger side clip will not come passed the oil cooler and the back drivers side will not clear the refrigerant hoses.

Am I missing some Indiana Jones trick of bottom left 5mm right - top left 10mm up etc??

Or am I just stupid and something else needs to come off? Silver 2009 HSE

Thanks Jules.

Had another thought on this while getting dressed this morning so checked the posts saying they removed the fan assembly and sure enough they were manuals so wouldn't have the oil cooler so I guess those with autos will have to stick with removing the inlet manifold. Silver 2009 HSE

Ahaaaa.... this makes sense to me. I've seen a few posts recommending the removal of the fan assembly to get easier access to the oil filter. ("it just unclips" etc). When I tried this the fan assembly unclipped easily but there was no way that it was going to come out, no matter how i oriented it without removing some pipes. I have an auto. Mystery solved!

Not so much of an issue on the si6 engine........just have to move the power steering pump reservoir temporarily out of the way.

when I do an oil change now I remove the fans. It's pretty simple, from memory:

-Remove the wiring to the fans, and unscrew the controller off the fan pack
-Remove the sensors under the bonnet and move out the way.
-Remove the cabin heater off it's mounts and push back.
-Remove connection to the radiator and plug with a cork.

Then you can wiggle the fans out from their ridiculously awfully designed mounting brackets! You will need some cardboard to avoid damaging the radiator putting them back in!
