Four injector fails - new ECU needed?

09 HSE Freelander 2 manual cut out before Christmas in Nottingham. Started again then cut out two minutes later (steering locked and everything). Crawled it to my local MOT centre using low revs and they plugged it in and diagnosed that all four injectors were showing as failed. This was alarming and scarily expensive but I managed to source four injectors from a breakers in Rotherham. My MOT centre replaced all four with the replacements and the same errors came up i.e., four injector faults. Mechanic scratched his head. He went on to check the electrical feeds to the injectors which were all spot on. He gave up at this stage.

Freelander now been transported to a specialist indie in Derby who have confirmed that there are error codes for all 4 injectors. They have dismissed the likelihood of my four original and four replacements being faulty and have stated that it must be an ECU fault. They have quoted me circa £700 for a replacement (gulp).

Does anyone know if the ECU can be purchased second hand/reconditioned?

Does anyone know if this sounds like a logical diagnosis to get me back on the road?

Any support would be much appreciated. My first Freelander and I have little mechanical knowledge. It has been a great family car for a couple of years and pulls my caravan with ease.

I won't be able to get hold of specific codes until the Derby garage opens on Monday. I do recall that the garage said each of four injector were listed separately as misfiring. I am guessing therefore that we are looking at PO14, PO24,PO34 and PO44 based on my limited online research.

I wonder if it might be worth checking whether the garage has tried a proper power-down and reboot, before going to the expense of a replacement ecu? 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

It’s not the high pressure fuel pump breaking up and sending swarf to the injectors is it?

For all four injectors to fail simultaneously is remarkable. I'm not doubting your mechanics ability, but I would suggest that the Freelander is correctly interrogated with the right dealer technician software - it would be well worth the diagnostic fee...otherwise it will become a bit of a tombola!

Thanks for the feedback. My original mechanic checked the state of the filter, which was fine. I will ask the garage about a power down and reset before ordering a new ECU. Worth a punt.

Sperly-My thoughts exactly, hence it has been moved to a Land Rover specialist now albeit an indie. But it is still showing the same fault hence I am reluctantly accepting the ECU verdict. A bloody expensive outcome but one that I don't think I can avoid

Actually very common, mostly due to contamination. Normally they seize but it doesn't show as a fault. fuel pressure faults can cause injector shut down. The injectors are normally powered by a relay, sometimes injector drivers in the ECU's fry and can shut the injectors down for saftey to prevent engine damage.

Diesel injectors should never be laid down once used and are impossible to keep clear of airborne dust.
A diagnostic tool is very rarely the answer for a fix either, experience, knowledge and understanding of the systems is key otherwise its just guess nostics !

These injectors run up to 150 volts,they way to test the ECU is to scope the injector output first.
each injector should have an impedance of 170-200 k ohms
I injector with a earth to the body will shut all four down.
Piezo injectors secondhand are very very risky indeed, quite possible original were seized and secondhand units are damaged from transit or dirt. They now have running tolerances of just 2 microns.
Maqy be worth taking your injectors to a diesel specialist first to confirm whether they are faulty. It will cost and not cheap but that will then eliminate or confirm closer diagnosis. Jaguar x-type sport gone

Latest update is that a new ECU was fitted and the problem remains. The garage have been able to get it to start and idle with two cylinders firing but once all four injectors are fitted it cuts out and diagnoses 4 injector failures. Next step for the garage is to mix and match my old set and new (from breakers) set of injectors.

Failing this I will be using oldgeezers advice and get all the injectors tested at a diesel specialist to find a certified set of four working injectors out of the set of eight I now own.

Fingers crossed. It has been off the road for the best part of a month.

With 2 injectors connected it works and with all 4 it wont??? With 2 different ECU's?
If yes, maybe you should look at things like wiring, especially power wires...

The wiring feeds have all been renewed to each of the injectors. I am hoping that oldgeezers suggestion that one bad earth in a single injector body can shut down the whole lot is the problem.
This might therefore involve getting a diesel specialist to test my collection of injectors and pick out four that are certified working.

Back on the road on Monday. The fault was found to be the tube return - LR051528. Filter had been clogged which knackered two of the injectors. A £40 part after all my hassle. Needless to say my final bill was over ten times that. Pleased to be back on the road though.

...but as the saying goes "he gives with one hand and takes with the other."

I have a stinking diagnostic report, which I will share with forum soon. I am hoping it is not a death sentence for my FL2.
