Mystery clunking noise issue

Hi All, I've had a Freelander 2 now bought new in 2014....no issues at all until now....where I had a clunking noise coming from the front dash area whenever I went over the occasional bump. No other faults and could not see anything amiss. Then went on a 750 mile round trip and only when coming back up the M6 at 70 went over a few bumps and felt something fall off under the car . The clunking immediately stopped ?. The car driving etc...all okay for last 100 miles . Got home checked underneath all around and again could still not find anything amiss. The local LR garage are quoting £95 + Vat an hour to look but with no guarantees etc..... car still driving fine now but to be sure I'm a bit concerned but can't see anything. Would be very happy if anyone reading this has any clues of where or what to look out for ?

Thanks in advance.

Dave.

Have you checked to see if the engine under tray is still there? It sounds as if something was lose hence the thumping then eventually fell off. I would be tempted to take it to a local garage not a main dealer and ask them to pop it up on the ramps to check underneath, probably do it for a few quid if nothing is wrong other than an engine undertray etc. 2014 Freelander 2 XS TD4

Hi, thanks for your reply...the under tray is still on, although not sure if anything that should be there still is. Are these difficult in removing and replacing in order to check , are they all in one piece ?

Cheers

Hi I checked the springs and cannot see any breakages, my thoughts now are with a heat shield that may have worked loose and fallen through the engine compartment .

I had a similar noise a week ago. Reported in another thread!
It turned out to be a broken spring. If the broken piece had fallen out on to the road I would never have spotted the problem.

The spring breaks at the bottom where the coils flatten out onto the bottom cup. The broken piece rattles about in the spring cup. Then as perhaps has happened in your case falls out.

You probably will not be able to see the break. If you put your hand in to the bottom of the spring you will be able to feel the spring sitting on the cup. Compare the two sides and you will notice the difference if the spring has broken and the bottom coil is missing.

Thankyou my friend ! ...just checked and Near side spring at the bottom has a jagged end to it so it looks like a few inches are missing.

Now to get it fixed which I fear is going to be costly. Freelander 2 2014 XS TD4

..... don't want to add to your woe, good practice is to change both springs on the same axle.

My local garage just did mine, 1¾ hours labour.
Total bill, £172.

Not too expensive with a good Indy.

Parts c. £50 + 60 - 90 minutes labour.

Question - if you are keeping the car do you replace springs on both sides?

Whilst that is good practice in most cases. Most experienced engineers will tell you that springs normally break through manufacturing defects or accidental damage causing stress points, rather than age related fatigue. I would just have the other spring examined and if there is no sign of damage leave it alone. But that is just my opinion and that of my experienced colleagues in the trade.

I can see that but would be happier with a new pair.
