United Kingdom 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Baltic Blue

I had a similar noise a week ago. Reported in another thread!
It turned out to be a broken spring. If the broken piece had fallen out on to the road I would never have spotted the problem.

The spring breaks at the bottom where the coils flatten out onto the bottom cup. The broken piece rattles about in the spring cup. Then as perhaps has happened in your case falls out.

You probably will not be able to see the break. If you put your hand in to the bottom of the spring you will be able to feel the spring sitting on the cup. Compare the two sides and you will notice the difference if the spring has broken and the bottom coil is missing.

Thankyou my friend ! ...just checked and Near side spring at the bottom has a jagged end to it so it looks like a few inches are missing.

Now to get it fixed which I fear is going to be costly. Freelander 2 2014 XS TD4

..... don't want to add to your woe, good practice is to change both springs on the same axle.

Not too expensive with a good Indy.

Parts c. £50 + 60 - 90 minutes labour.

Question - if you are keeping the car do you replace springs on both sides?

Whilst that is good practice in most cases. Most experienced engineers will tell you that springs normally break through manufacturing defects or accidental damage causing stress points, rather than age related fatigue. I would just have the other spring examined and if there is no sign of damage leave it alone. But that is just my opinion and that of my experienced colleagues in the trade.

I can see that but would be happier with a new pair.
