Diesel, cutting out, please help!!!

Hi,
bought my 2.2 Diesel Freelander 2 last year, I fall in love with it but I've got quite a problem with it.
I did a service, changed oil, filters and fuel filter. Couldn't start the engine first so I took filter out, filled it with diesel and it started.

It can drive nice for few days and cut out without a warning. Especially when it's cold. There is no fault on dash, starter motor works normal, it's not struggling much when starting.
I change fuel filter second time cause I thought maybe that's causing it, but that didn't help.
I don't know what else I could do, check, change. I'm working as a truck mechanic so I got some experience with mechanics but never had that problem before.
Maybe someone had similar problem?
Thank you in advance for your help and comments.

Hi, always the worst when its your own vehicle, especially if your fixing others all day long.
As you have already changed the filter, what make is the filter ? is it aftermarket or genuine ?
its always possible to have two defective filters.
me personally genuine only, if the problem only started after changing then may be focus on that area first. Jaguar x-type sport gone
Jaguar x-type 2.2d sport one of my best cars ever sadly gone
Freelander 2 GS auto 2008 most unreliable ever ! gladly gone

I had some issues with mine where it would start missing and run really rough. On closer inspection I started to notice air in the fuel line running from the filter to the injection pump. This was made worse when I jiggled it. I replaced that line and the problem went away. Before replacing it however I wrapped the connections around the filter housing with plumbers tape which temporarily stopped air getting into the lines. I suspect the o rings in the connections eventually perish or wear thin allowing enough air in to cause problems. Also check that the drain screw on top of the fuel filter is closed tight (but not overtight) I’ve read of air getting into the system that way as well.

It does sound like an air lock in the fuel system.
A few years ago when I had all the fuel pipes replaced on a Mercedes, the engine would randomly cut out and restarted ok. After a day or two the fault cleared itself.

This sounds a little like something I had.
Mines an auto, and yes it would stall out of the blue, but it would also 'hiccup'.
Took it to my local indy who diagnosed a very expensive part which made no difference.
They struggled to find anything, especially as there was no fault history.

In the end as I had time off and didn't particularly need the car, I handed the keys over
and said use it as your run around.
Eventually they sussed it, crankshaft sensor had starting to play up.
