Advice on used high mileage 2014 FL2

Hi, new to the forum but have enjoyed reading the Freelander experiences of others.

Today I was looking at a 2014 FL2 with a high mileage of 118000, price £8K. The seller (general 2nd hand car dealer) said it had "service history" but on looking at the LR online history, the only services recorded on that are at 20K (16,000 mile service done) 96K (64,000 miles service done) and 112K (96,000 miles service done) all at a LR dealer.

Although the schedules for these particular services cover the major replacements which are needed, eg brake hoses at 96K, if it really hasn't had the intervening oil changes that's a long way to go on the same oil.

Would services done at a non-LR dealer generally get put on the official LR record?

The car itself looks in good condition and drives well with no untoward noises but would you avoid it based on uncertain service history? Would an older lower mileage car be a better bet, there seem to be a lot of 2009/2010 cars with 60-70K miles but there is a big service due for all of those at 10 years.

Independent garages can only add services they have carried out onto LR online service history if they have paid for the pleasure, i would want to see service invoices and receipts that match all of the missing online services.

Is the dealer willing (and able) to buy you a warranty from a reputable company?

Otherwise do you have sufficient funds to cover any repairs?

The FL2 is a complicated car, but is a pleasure to drive and own, as long as it is well looked after. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Thanks for the replies, the dealer is offering 6 month RAC warranty, but I am not sure what that is worth.

The previous invoices etc are apparently delayed somewhere in the Christmas post...

RAC warranty not worth the paper its written on, the RAC sold it off to a company called Assurant a while back so they are trading as RAC in name only, google RAC warranty reviews... not good, sorry. 94 Disco 300 TDI Gone

Yeah I had read some of the reviews of the "RAC" warranty and got that impression.

So I guess the question is, is it worth £8K given that it may possibly have gone 76,000 miles / 29 months without an oil change. The dealer says they have just replaced the clutch / flywheel.

On the flip side providing you can determine it has been looked after they are a very robust vehicle...I would want to see the invoices or service book properly so would disregard the ‘lost in post’ excuse...

There are hundreds out there for sale at the moment so it’s a buyers market...

Don’t be frightened by high mileage...we have just done the same and bought a 2013 Dynamic .... the last owner was an active forum member... he bought the vehicle in 2016 with 40,000 miles on it and sold it to us this year with 110,000. So the car has spent its life trundling up and down the motorways to accrue it’s huge mileage in that short time.... Far better to buy this car with minimal stress on its components than one with half of its mileage that has lived in a city with thousands of cycles of its drivetrain gear changing and choked egrs.....

I would want to see some evidence that the clutch has been changed, after all why would a dealer go to that expense when he might be able to sell it on as it is (unless the clutch was totally shot). I understand that dealer must supply some sort of warranty so will go for the cheapest. And then there is the invoices are in the post story Unless you can contact the previous owner I would walk away from this one. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

As with anything you buy second hand unless you know the previous owner it’s a gamble, a fully stamped up dealer service in a book looks good but don’t be fooled Whistle but £8k for a 2014 FL2 is cheap might be worth a gamble.

Exactly.

Prior to the introduction of variable servicing intervals (which, to me, is all about what can the manufacturer get away with during the warranty period; since nothing changed in the engine etc) the oil and filter needed to be changed every 12 months or 15K miles which ever came first. So to me that car should have had 7 oil changes. If its really had only 3 oils changes in 118K miles then I wouldnt touch it.

But, as has been said already, if the car has done a high % of fast motorway miles with relatively few cold starts and short journeys then it be in good nick.

But without the detailed history its all guess work. My wife did 14K in a year driving to work 9 miles away and local shopping - loads of wear. Jules

The FL2 seems too cheap despite the mileage for a 2014 model unless it's a low end model.

Is it a previous insurance write off. Cat C or D etc.

14K in a year ????

365days (assuming she worked every day of the year) x 18mls (return journey) = 6570mls ........

I would place a tracker on the vehicle and her mobile phone. Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter
