well who are you going to believe? owners or land rover Laughing
I have to knock it into manual sometimes because it's staying in a higher gear than necessary, real pain if I just have the bike rack on and it thinks it's a caravan! Common sense isn't very common.

Well, I know who I believe!

And if it's staying in a higher gear than you find necessary/desirable then it's clearly not doing this because it thinks it has a trailer on the back as in that case it would shift down a gear, wouldn't it?

We've had this discussion before but here's what it says in the handbook.

Hill ascent, towing, and high altitude
The lower gears are selected, and maintained for longer than usual. This helps overcome the loss of momentum when towing, or ascending hills. It also helps overcome the loss of engine torque when the vehicle is operating at high altitudes.

This suggests that the change in auto box behaviour is simply a function of the extra load as no reference is made to the trailer electrical connection being made, unlike the reference to the rear parking sensors being disabled when the trailer connection is made.

OK, so if it's not electrical then how does it know " This helps overcome the loss of momentum when towing,"? Common sense isn't very common.

From the workshop manual for earlier (diesel) models:

"When the vehicle is pulling a trailer or driving up an incline, the TCM detects the increased resistance by monitoring engine
torque and speed signals received from the ECM on the high speed CAN bus and also transmission output shaft speed
sensor signals. Uphill and trailer mode will provide downshifts to prevent a drop in transmission torque output and
maintain driving force."

Thank you, that makes more sense to me, so if I was driving up hill with a trailer but without the electrics plugged in it would still drop a gear? the same as if I had five Americans, full petrol and lpg tanks and a boot full of sandbags without a trailer. Laughing BUT when i'm driving at 50mph on a level road with a trailer the auto want's to use fifth gear although if I use manual It will happily go along in sixth gear, when changing back to auto it drops back to fifth! Common sense isn't very common.

Did you find your wiring kit?

I got my trailer hitch from etrailer and it was really easy to installed.

Did not get the wiring kit but they have one available. -- https://www.etrailer.com/t1-2010_Land+Rover_LR2.htm
