What to check FL2 SD4 HSE

Hi all,

Just migrated to Gibraltar from (UK), and sold my fantastic MY 2005 D3 TDV6 HSE on Saturday, before getting on a plane and flying south.

Would have taken it with me, but SWIMBO not keen on a RHD and driving on the right,

Going to look at a MY 2012 FL2 SD4 HSE Auto today; seller wants £11.5k!

68k miles with servicing by indi in Spain. Cam belt definitely not done.

Can anyone give me a list of things to look at when I see it?

I’ve got an IID tool and intend to scan the ECU for trouble, but would be keen to know what mechanical things I should be looking at as well.

All you can do is make sure that it drives well, ALL the features are working, it is damage free (bodywork and underneath).

Importantly, a complete service record by a reputable garage, and a solid warranty.

The FL2, like most modern cars, is a complicated machine, which requires looking after.

A good SD4 is a pleasure to drive.

It’s a private sale.

Even so, not sure what the warranty type options are from Spain.

And, as it’s been in Gibraltar, I suspect the body will have evidence of “park by feel”

So, been to see it, and this is what I’ve picked up

Jan 2012 2.2l SD4 HSE, 72000 miles

Dealer services up to 2018, after that an indi that has just changed oils.

The owner did say that an oil ‘breather pipe’ was replaced in May of this year, but didn’t know where or why. He’s also had to replace the battery.

Bodywork not bad (for Gib)

But,

1: high level brake light not working
2: squeak from driver side front brake on low speed braking
3: broken near side mirror glass
4: some sort of staining rear passenger footwell
5: drivers door seal looks water stained
6: front end bounces 2/3 times after speed bump
7: oil leak at back of engine sufficient to cause oil dripping from protective plate underside of car (photos below)









Driving it, engine seemed smooth, no whine from rear diff, gearbox was smoother than my disco 3, and no smoke from the back when in sport mode and flooring it. Manual change through the gears seems ok. About 29 miles to the gallon (9.5 litres/100km)

Looking to find out what people here think.

My biggest concern is the oil leak, as the mention of an oil breather pipe makes me think an oil seal has blown, but I couldn’t see the source.

The bouncing makes me think the dampers are going, and the brakes need a look to see if they need replacing.

Cam belt hasn’t been done, so that will need doing, and not sure what to make of the stop light; is it just new bulbs or a new unit?

My disco 3 was getting 30 to the gallon, so fuel economy seems a little off?

Would appreciate your thoughts, and thanks in advance.

When was the battery changed ?

Personally, I'd want those error codes cleared and see if anything come back up and also I 'd want that oil leak checking out more before I bought it. Jules

SD4 Auto will usually get between 27-34MPG depending on how and where you drive, and so 29MPG sounds about right if you are mostly driving around Gibraltar.

Personally I would avoid any car with an oil leak unless you are a mechanic, as it could be very expensive to fix.

When I was looking for a Freelander, I checked the MOT history on each one, and avoided any which had oil leak as an advisory in the history.

In that picture is the back of the engine, above the lambda sensor.
The picture shows part of the EGR cooler and above that is the breather pipe you are mentioning about it was changed.

Just returned today from a 400+ mile round trip to Devon in my SD4. dash shows 33.4 mpg. I don't hang about when driving either so would agree with those MPG figures for a car in reasonable condition. Thumbs Up 2007 TD4 XS The work horse that earns its up keep

Ditto that oil seal; but cost me a £grand. However, I love my 2012 SD4 HSE, and am keeping for the foreseeable future. High mileage and repairs don't frighten me; I've had three Range Rovers, one of which did 360,000 miles over 11 years and cost £300 every 3 MONTHS as the servicing intervals was 6k miles. There was always something that needed doing but I loved every minute of possession!

So, from the experience here, do you think it likely the breather pipe relates to the oil leak? As in, could that be responsible for the crankshaft seal failure, or is that another issue entirely.

Upshot being, I guess, is this car worth paying £11.5k for given it looks like I’m going to need to spend a £1k on cam belt, £1k on crankshaft seal, whatever for new dampeners and a new high level stop light box?

This is how I would see these issues.


1: high level brake light not working

7: oil leak at back of engine sufficient to cause oil dripping from protective plate underside of car (photos below)

1.Easy fix replace bulb, clean contacts worse case change light unit.
2.Check pad wear and disc condition, service items so simple to change as for squeak change make of pads.
3.Easy fix source one from ebay.
4.Get the car valeted.
5.Change door seal if necessary, easy fix. Check panel gaps for signs of accident damage.
6.Change front dampers service item easy fix.
7.As already stated could be crankshaft oil seal gone but a blocked breather could cause oil to blow past oil seals so the seal may be fine and cause no further problems now the breather has been changed.

NB why would the breather be blocked usually caused by dirty oil so it may have missed oil changes in the past or cheap oil used, have a look at the oil filler cap it is dirty inside the engine or back of cap.
Also worn rings could cause this as the crankcase would get pressurised by blowing past the rings. Unlikley as you said the car didn't blow smoke when floored.

I understand if your not into DIY then this lot could cost a packet, either negotiate a lower price to cover the cost of repairs or ask the vendor to get the items fixed (or at least some of them) before you buy.

I'm in the market for one, and the list of problems, the last 'oil change' at a non-official garage (avoiding cost) , all give me a bad feeling.
In Spain quite a few Freelanders come up every month. Might be worth waiting this one out.

An oil change at a non official garage is of no concern. An oil change is about the most basic on any car, a job any garage of any sort can change an oil and filter - you must like paying LR prices Shocked Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Anyone offering a vehicle for sale with a list of problems that are obvious and 'easily' fixed probably doesn't bother looking after a vehicle. I'm into DIY mechanics and love a bargain, but I'd look elsewhere I think. MY11 SD4 SE Auto
