throttle emits high pitched noise followed by a click - NOT

had my freelander 2 for 3 years now, it has NEVER emitted a high-pitched noise or a click, no running problems noticed.

BUT, if I wanted to correct this fault, what exactly is needed, a new throttle ?

Its the throttle body that makes the noise after the engine is switched off. My car does make the high-pitched noise followed by a click. Any other noise from it is properly bad....not so sure about no noise!.

Do search for "throttle body" there are plenty of threads about it.

So if I read this right
if it does not make the noise then = Bad.
If makes high pitch and click = Good

Have been easily confused for many years,

Thats my understanding although reading some of the old threads there seems to be quite a bit of confusion.

high pitch and click = good
lots of clicking/rattling = bad
no noise = stuck open/just quiet/get some else to listen

so if mine is all silent and that equates to 'stuck open' is there a cheap fix ?? Very Happy Very Happy 2017 SEAT Ateca 4drive 2.0 xcellence (May 2022 -

If it was stuck open you wouldn't be able to stop the engine. On a diesel the main purpose of the throttle body is to stop it. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

I don't think that’s quite right. The engine will shut down when you switch off and cut the power from the ECU to the injectors. The purpose of the throttle body on FL2's is to help with EGR and to shut the engine down smoothly. Normally when they are poggered, apart from the clicking and crunching, the engine will take a few seconds longer to come to a stop when you switch off. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
Evoque SD4 Dynamic Lux Auto
Present: Audi A3 S Line.

found this info from another forum : -

" . . . . . .It,s the noise that the ECU makes when powering down, the ECU is actually keeping the electric motor for the throttle body active, part of the reason is to 'shake' the throttle butterfly in the hope of dislodging any carbon build up, thus avoiding a jamming of the butterfly at the idle position, and thus avoiding making the throttle motor work harder to over-come the jamming. And yes, it will happen every ignition cycle, just like the ABS pump checking itself every start-up/move-off. . . . ." 2017 SEAT Ateca 4drive 2.0 xcellence (May 2022 -

These two videos explain better whether the noise you are experiencing is a fault or normal. The second one shows the faulty one stripped down and why it screams

Hope this helps

Thank you for the videos, the whole thread is informative. Before replacing the throttle body, I will try the repair kit. This seems to be familiar with Russian forum, just saw this on auction site, no affiliation. https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=ht...3373378175

The throttle body on my 2014 SD4 sometimes "whines" for over 10 minutes followed by a click. Always done it - car runs perfectly.
IIRC Our previous TD4's never did it for such long lengths of time though. Jules

New throttle body fitted this weekend . It’s a Pierburg which I’m pretty sure is the OE manufacturer , but it came from Euro Car Parts . The “ whine “ at “ignition off“ is now so quiet it would be easy to think it’s not actually there . Certainly much quieter than it has been recently . The clattering noise it made when it died mid week sounded just like you would expect the actual failure to sound like , which was the moulded gears ragging themselves to death .

Note : As the throttle body is designed to fail in the open position , you can continue to drive the car after failure . The butterfly is spring loaded to keep it open and is closed by the gears . With the throttle body open the engine shutdown was lumpy . 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership
